WE'RE HANGIN' WITH.....EDDIE MURPHY
The Dr. Dolittle 2 Interview

With his voicing of Shrek's lovable sidekick Donkey, Eddie Murphy has endeared himself to us more than ever. In Dr. Dolittle 2, he's still that fast talking funnyman but with a twist. He's a responsible dad who has to deal with spending too much time away from home, watching his teen daughter launch into a serious boyfriend relationship and, oh, yeah, help a bunch of talking animals save their forest homes. We spoke briefly to Eddie about the sequel to the successful original film, being the movie dad of a 16-year-old and how he's grown as an actor.

AGW: This movie is sort of a role reversal for you. You're the responsible dad in this film, not the young punk. How do you feel about that?

Eddie: It was gradual. I had become a dad in real life. This was the first time I ever played a dad on screen. Dolittle is the first time I've ever had a wife and kids. I'm lovin' it because I get to play such a wide range of emotions instead of just playing that fast talking brash guy.

AGW: What's your relationship in this movie like with Raven Symone who plays your teen daughter?

Eddie: she's my 16-year-old daughter who's going through all the changes that a 16-year-old girl goes through compounded by the fact that her dad can talk to animals and the weirdness that that would bring to your life. Sometimes, we're just a father and daughter screaming at each other (laughs).

AGW: The family stuff is so real in this movie.

Eddie: Yeah, when they said they wanted to do a sequel and wanted me to read the script, they said that this one revolved around the family and the family coming together. I thought that was a cool thing.

AGW: Why is this film better than the first Dolittle?

Eddie: If you do a sequel and you rush it and just throw it together, you run the risk of making a film that is going to hurt the integrity of the first film. The first movie was well received and reviewed and the people like it. If we didn't set out to do something better and not just have more talking animals and no good story, it would have hurt the first picture. Can't do that.
