The “Mysterious”

Emma Roberts

by Lynn B

Emma Roberts in NANCY DREWYou might first have seen 16-year-old actress Emma Roberts on TV starring as Addie Singer in the Nick comedy series “Unfabulous” or discovered her as a young teen coping with a mermaid in her pool in the film Aquamarine. Yes, that’s her in those cute ads for Dooney & Bourke bags in Teen Vogue magazine.

The brown-haired daughter of actor Eric Roberts and niece of actress Julia Roberts has been visiting movie sets since her early childhood so she was familiar with the drill when starring as the much-loved teen sleuth Nancy Drew in the new movie.

We caught up with the ultra-busy Emma for a phone chat. She was in New York talking with reporters before plans to attend the Broadway musical “Legally Blonde” tomorrow night. Here’s the haps on Emma’s reading and musical faves, making the film and future plans…

AGW: Where are you calling us from?

Emma: I’m in the amazing city of New York!

AGW: We just saw the film. How are you like Nancy? She seems so in control.

Emma: I think that I’m like Nancy a lot in some ways but I would kind of freak out at situations and people more if they were the same situations and people that Nancy deals with in the movie. She knows how to stay calm and nice and I would kind of lose it.

AGW: Do you have the kind of curiosity it takes to be a detective? Any interest in it?

Emma: Yeah. But Nancy Drew mysteries don’t just fall into my lap so I don’t know how to use my detective skills but I think it’s fun and I’m a curious person and a little bit nosey sometimes so I would definitely be good at being a detective.

AGW: Have you ever been the new kid at school and found it hard to break into the cliques?

Emma: I was always the new kid but I made friends really easily. There was high school drama but I was never like Nancy was.. on the outside of it.

AGW: Ned, Nancy’s boyfriend in the film, says that Nancy is only happy when there is trouble around her. Are you like that? Do you like things stirred up in your life?

Emma: You don’t want everything to be perfect. You always want a little mystery in your life. Life wouldn’t be fun it you knew everything. But, I don’t really look for trouble.

AGW: Favorite scene to shoot?

Max Thieriot, Emma Roberts and Josh Flitter in Warner Bros. Pictures' Nancy DrewEmma: I loved the kissing scene [with cute co-star Max Thieriot]. I’m just kidding. It was kind of an embarrassing scene just because me and Max became really good friends on the set so it was kind of like weird but it was fine. My favorite scenes were inside in the mansion because we got to shoot those scenes on the Warner Brothers lot and we would have golf cart races and mess around on the set.

AGW: Did the cast hang out after shooting?

Emma: We all hung out and went bowling a few times. Just the younger members, obviously.

AGW: Is Nancy’s preppie style anything like your own? Did you keep any thing from the wardrobe?

Emma: I loved it and thought it was really cool and timeless. A lot of the clothes were made one of a kind especially for the movie so no one else will have them but I didn’t get to keep any. I think they’re going to save it if we do a sequel.

AGW: What do you like to read? Mysteries?

Emma: I love reading in general. I read all the time. Right now I’m reading “The Other Boelyn Girl” which is really good and I’m excited for the movie that’s coming out. And, I love “The Gossip Girl” series and I’m also reading “The It Girl” series. I also love the book “My Sister’s Keeper”. That’s a really good book.

AGW: Favorite music now?

Emma: I love Gwen Stefani. I love Akon. I like Rascal Flatts, Avril Lavigne.

AGW: I know you like to sing but would you like to be in a musical on stage or a movie musical?

Emma: No. I really hate musicals. Well, I like watching Broadway. I’m actually seeing “Legally Blonde” on Broadway tomorrow so I’m excited about that but I’m not a big musical fan.. for me to do one [I mean]. I wouldn’t like to. “Hairspray” looks really good for this Summer. That was a good musical.

AGW: What about making more CDs as a singer?

Emma: I might want to do that when I’m older. I think starting a band would be fun. But, right now I just want to focus on movies and acting.

AGW: Are you still making “Unfabulous”?

Emma: We finished the third and final season and it’s going to air in September.

AGW: What did you learn from that experience that you are taking into your movie work?

Emma: I kind of learned how to balance school and work. Going to school on set.

AGW: Coming out next for you is Wild Child. Can you tell us about your character in that? [big pause.. whoops, we got cut off]

Emma: Hello again! On Wild Child, yes, I’m leaving for England on Monday to shoot Wild Child and I play this spoiled California princess who gets shipped off to boarding school in England because she has such bad behavior and is sassy. I’m really excited for that.
