We're Hangin' With.....

ESTELLA WARREN

by: Lynn B.

Okay, she's gorgeous; flawless skin, big blue eyes, full lips and a great figure. When the femme star of Planet of the Apes and the new family action comedy Kangaroo Jack, joined us for a recent interview, she wore heels, jeans, simple black stretch top and dangly gypsy earrings that would swing around a lot since she's very animated when she talks. Between sips of soda, she grinned and said "Okay, bring it on!". We learned that she had great fun in the outback playing a wildlife conservationist, has given up the gym for hiking with her dog and still has some emotional scars from her childhood efforts to become an Olympic swimmer.

AGW: What made you say 'yes' to the Kangaroo Jack role?

Estella: I'd been running around in these dark films with apes or played the crying girlfriend or doing independent films where it's all improv and I never got to do a comedy. This role, is very empowering. When you have one of these really strong female characters, you want to grab it. It's kind of nice for young girls to see that aspect.

AGW: Besides, going to Australia can't be too bad.

Estella: I think we all kind of loved Sydney because there were great restaurants and great nightlife and fun. Then we went to Alice Springs and after being in Sydney it was like, 'now what are we gonna do?'. And then out to Coober Pedy, the opal mining town and that's where we really played a lot of Boggle (laughs).

AGW: We hear there were poisonous critters everywhere.

Estella: It's really weird when you go to work in the morning and there's the snake guy prodding the bushes just making sure that there are no snakes. I felt sorry for the snake guy because he's in shorts. It's gonna bite him, but I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

AGW: What was it like coming on set with two jokester guys (Jerry O'Connell and Anthony Anderson)? Did they pull pranks on you?

Estella: It was fantastic because we all ended up pulling [jokes] on each other. These two goofballs would one up me and then I'd have to one up back and it ended up being, in real life, a literal competition. I was really comfortable by the end of it.

AGW: Tell us about working with camels.

Estella: They did tell us we were going to camel school and we all thought they were completely joking. To get them to lie down you have to say 'tut, tut'. We thought 'these guys are funnier than all of us', but it was true. Then you get on the camel and they're not the most elegant of beasts you know. They don't smell very elegant either.

AGW: Jerry (O'Connell) said in the press kit that kissing you was one of the best experiences of his life. True?

Estella: He exaggerates!

AGW: Was that a fun scene?

Estella: It's fine. It's fun because you just do it so many times that it's like, 'okay, here we go again'. "Ooh that was a little slobbery'. It was funny. It wasn't that awkward.

AGW: You've gone from a swimming career to modeling, then acting. Was there a down time or hard time for you?

Estella: Of course there are ups and downs through all of it. It was really disappointing that I trained ten years to go to the Olympics and they take out my events. That's devastating. It changes your whole life. You move away from home when you are twelve to go to sports school so you can get there and you never get there.

AGW: Looking back, is it a blessing in disguise?

Estella: Absolutely. I think a lot of things are. You think about moving away from home when you're twelve and moving to New York when you're eighteen. These were difficult things and, career wise, things have gone really well but, as a child growing into an adult on your own, that's difficult but, if it didn't happen that way, I probably wouldn't be here so, yes, my life is perfect (laughs).

AGW: How did moving away from home at twelve make you the person you are?

Estella: You just grow up really quick. I had my first apartment on my own when I was fifteen and then I bought my first house when I was seventeen because I had done one modeling job and I thought, honestly, after this one job, I was the richest woman on earth. I thought, 'oh, my God, I'm gonna buy a house'.

AGW: Where did you live from age 12 to age 15?

Estella: I moved in with different families who had swimmers on the same team and that family would take me in for a little while and then they'd switch families when they got tired of me or something. (She looks sad) Some were better experiences than others.

AGW: Did the training all those years give you a discipline that helps you as an actress?

Estella: Absolutely. As an actor, you have to be there on time, you have to be disciplined, you have to be ready and prepared. Sometimes I'll go to auditions in L.A. and I can't tell you how many times people ask me, 'have you read the script?' 'Oh, I was out last night partying', or 'Oh, I didn't get the chance but I really think I'm gonna like it'. That's crazy.

AGW: Are you enjoying the acting career then?

Estella: I love it. This is the one thing that I really decided that I wanted to do. I started swimming when I was seven. I started because my older sister did it and I had to do everything my older sister did. And then, I was really good at it so I kept doing it. I didn't want to be a model. I wanted to be an Olympic swimmer but people give you a [big] check and you're like 'okay, I'll be a model'. I kept modeling to save enough money to come to L.A

AGW: What in your life serves as an anti-drug for you?

Estella: No drugs. Absolutely not. It's worth too much to me, everything that I've built. It would be such a stupid reason to lose everything. I have a dog. I hike my dog every day and it's really great in Los Angeles because you have these great canyons. You really get outdoors and see things. I'm kind of anti-gym now because I have this great city around me to play with.

AGW: What kind of dog?

Estella: He's a mutt. His name is Smasher. (She flexes her muscles) He's a brawny, compact muscle dog. We go hiking. He goes everywhere with me. I wanted to bring him here today. My best friend from Canada came in yesterday and he's taking care of Smasher.

AGW: Do you worry about your career week to week?

Estella: Sometimes it sucks. Sometimes it's hard. You don't know what's coming next. We'd like to have that stability, have a daily routine. That's where the discipline kicks in. You have to go, 'okay, just wait it out' or if there's too much going on, get somebody to help you. It comes in extremes. You're working like crazy and then you've got three months off and you don't know what to do in between. That's when you find you own balance.

AGW: What do you do when not working?

Estella: I have my dog. I have a boyfriend and I have friends and we go out to dinner. I get to learn different crafts other than acting; mountain climbing. I learned how to surf in Australia. My boyfriend is Peter Berg. He was in The Great White Hype, The Last Seduction, he was on "Chicago Hope' (on t.v.). He directed and wrote Very Bad Things. Now, he's directing Helldorado for The Rock and Universal. Isn't it great when I just tell you, [who I'm seeing] then nobody cares (laughs).
