We're Hangin' Out At.....

THE E.T. 20TH ANNIVERSARY

PREMIERE!!

If you have only seen Spielberg's beloved classic on video and heard the score on your home system, you must rush to the theater to check out the new version with added scenes, enhanced visual effects and a new re-mastered soundtrack.

I had the chance to again experience E.T. The Extraterrestrial on the big screen at its recent re-issue premiere at the Shrine auditorium in Los Angeles. The grand event benefited the Special Olympics and included original composer John Williams conducting a full symphony orchestra throughout the film. The master musician conducted his entire Oscar-winning score live, following 1,200 video music cues from stage while the film played on a giant screen above his head.

The Shrine, where many Oscar ceremonies have been held, is a show in itself, an Arabian palace with a gold and red puffy, pin-cushion ceiling from which dangle vast, multi-colored chandeliers. On the red carpet, before the screening, were a host of who's who in Hollywood. The original cast members were all there on a cold, blustery day that saw actresses in spring dresses putting on jackets against a cold wind. Dee Wallace, who played the mom in the film, looked much the same after 20 years and said she hadn't seen the cast since the 10 year reunion but recalled how the young actors were given lines by Spielberg to surprise her. When you see the film, Dee's shocked and delighted reactions to some of the kid dialogue are genuine.

Drew Barrymore and Henry Thomas, who played Gertie and Elliott in the film, reunited for a big hug with Spielberg. Drew, now red-haired and wearing a peasant blouse, revealed "I thought E.T. was real. I would wrap my sweater around him to keep him warm". Henry, tall and handsome, in jean jacket, remembered the pressure of carrying a film at age 8, but confided "Steven always made it fun". As a producer herself now, Drew tries to "make my sets as relaxed and happy as his are". On seeing Spielberg's baseball cap, Henry chimed in with "Hey, where's my E.T. hat?" Spielberg's take on E.T.'s message was "He teaches you to look into his eyes and see what's inside. Looks are only skin deep".

Buffy's Alyson Hannigan, wearing a fuzzy, pink hat, wouldn't reveal any new secrets on her show but admits she saw E.T. 8 times as a kid. Neve Campbell saw the film at age 8 and cheers the love and friendship message. Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, the two young stars of Spy Kids say their 2nd film will be loaded with new gadgets. Alexa says her character will have a really cute crush in the new film and Daryl admitted that he has a big real life crush on Chelsea Clinton. "Sabrina The Teenage Witch"'s Melissa Joan Hart admits she's just chillin' after wrapping the 6th season of her show. Princess Diaries' Anne Hathaway raved about working with Julie Andrews, "the most wonderful person ever and so funny'. Wacky Matt Lillard who will play Shaggy in the June Scooby Doo feature, says "the CGI is awesome in the (Scooby) film". A.I.'s Haley Joel Osment, looking grown up in black leather jacket, has just wrapped a WWII drama called Edges of the Lord. He told us that he would have liked to have played the part of Elliott. "Every kid connects to it". Olympic skater Scott Hamilton confided that this year's winner Sarah Hughes "is being pulled all over the country. She wants to go back to school".

Once everyone was cozy inside the theater, Special Olympics founder (and mom of Maria Shriver) Eunice Shriver talked about Spielberg's long association with the organization and said "We come to celebrate differences". Actor Peter Coyote from the film introduced John Williams and the magic began. The playing of the E.T. theme got a standing ovation!

The party after the film was phenomenal. A catering company had transformed a huge exhibition hall into Elliott's forest complete with E.T.'s huge spaceship, pine trees, a blue, night sky ceiling with traveling comets rushing by and more food than an army of aliens could eat, including a fantastic dessert bar serving hot fudge sundaes. Guests could get a temp tattoo of E.T. flying past the moon or have their pictures taken on a bike recreating the flying scene with Elliot and E.T. digitally inserted leading the way!

Earlier, when introducing his entire cast and screenwriter Melissa Matheson, who joined him on stage, Spielberg thanked audiences around the world. "You have embraced E.T. and made the last twenty years seem like twenty minutes".
