We're Hangin' With.....The Star of "Barbershop 2: Back In Business"...

EVE!

"Shop" Girl Supreme

by: Lynn B.

As a hip hop queen, gorgeous Eve wowed ‘um with “Let There Be Eve”, “Scorpion” and recently “Eve-olution” but that wasn’t creatively fulfilling enough for the golden-skinned beauty. Eve went on to tackle television with roles on “Third Watch” and now her own popular self-titled show on UPN. The multi-talented star appeared briefly in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and was the only girl barber in the first Barbershop. Now, she’s back as bad-attitude Terri in Barbershop 2: Back in Business.

We had a sit-down with the rapper/actress/fashion designer in L.A. Eve looked very sporty in cute black pants, ivory jacket and she’d tucked her hair up in a sporty little hat. Lip gloss and a little mascara seemed to be her only make-up. The duds weren’t from her “Fetish” design line but she was wearing an Eve-inspired tank top. Eve’s Barbershop 2 director Kevin Sullivan told us, “She’s destined to be a movie star. She’s got movie star soul. It’s like watching a flower bloom. Something spectacular will happen”. She’s honest, earnest and fun as well. Check it out…

AGW: Do you feel that doing this film was like coming back to a family?

Eve: It was definitely like coming back to the same family as far as cast goes and even a lot of the crew came back. It was just a new captain for the ship and that took a little adjusting, but Kevin [Rodney Sullivan] is cool. So, it turned out good.

AGW: What are the differences in direction this time around?

Eve: Kevin's style of directing is, well, he keeps it tight. He keeps the reigns tight. He's like, 'Okay, lets go back. We've got to get it together and go.' Tim [Story] just wasn't that way, but both of them worked. They just have different styles.

AGW: You had one big kissing scene in the back room with hottie Michael Ealy. How did that go?

Eve: [big grin] We laughed. In between those scenes, we were laughing and talking about all types of stuff. I was very, very nervous because it was my first screen kiss and I told Michael 'I'm nervous.' He was like, 'For what?' I don't know. It was cool. We were talking in between kissing, in between scenes. We were worried about how it looked. He was like, 'I wonder if that's hot enough?' [Laughs]

AGW: The theme of this movie is urban renewal, how big companies are moving in and putting the mom and pop stores out of business. Is there a good and bad side?

Eve: I think that it can be good, but I love the way the movie sheds light on it. There are people who are for the quick sellout and I think that you have to remember “Mrs. Johnson” who's lived on that block for thirty years. I guess that it's hard to say to a corporation, 'What about Mrs. Johnson?' They don't care. They're just trying to make money, but you know, if you kind of incorporated Mrs. Johnson a little bit and still built up the community [it would be better]. Because these people built the neighborhood, really. It's the same thing that happened on 125th Street in Harlem, which looks beautiful, but there were a lot of people who got pushed out and that's not right.

AGW: You played a significant role in both “Barbershops”, what was the difference between the two?

Eve: Well, I love both films. I don't have a favorite and I can't pick. I think that they're both great films. As far as my role, the first one was more of a commitment, but that was because of scheduling. I was able to be there longer. This one, I just couldn't be there. I had to start my TV show and so, they fit me in and I think that they did a pretty good job of having me in it, but I love the transition from the first one with Terri being so feisty and in this one, showing a little bit of, 'Okay, maybe I'm a little too angry. Maybe I need to get it together and get a little more into myself.' So, I liked it.

AGW: There was a lot of musical talent in this movie. Did you guys ever jam together?

Eve: No, we didn't actually. That's funny, but we didn't.

AGW: What are the fan parts of doing both rap and film?

Eve: Well, coming from music, it's an adjustment. The early mornings are an adjustment and especially now that I'm acting on a TV show, the monotony of going to the same place, seeing the same people every single day, that was an adjustment for me too, but I love acting. I love it because it's just a different artistic outlet. It takes me away from my music, but it makes me excited to go back to my music. So, I like the different worlds.

AGW: How much do you appreciate the fact that Latifah has broken ground for all three things that you've done from tv, film to music, do you appreciate that?

Eve: Most definitely. It's amazing to see just where she has gone. I know her music from 'U.N.I.T.Y.' and then, I saw 'Living Single' and then, I watched her movies, and it's like, 'Wow, this is the same thing that I'm doing.' So, for me, it's a total motivation, completely.

AGW: How much input do you have into your clothing line?

Eve: I don't sketch at all, but I have ideas and I have a team of designers who do the seasons and they give me line sheets and I look at them every couple of weeks and cross off things or change colors or change patterns, but I couldn't sketch.

AGW: How difficult is it to keep focus on all these different things?

Eve: It's hard. There are days when I'm like, 'Oh God, I'm ready to run away,' but I have an idea in my head of what kind of life that I want and the things that I should be doing and need in my life and I have to keep working, but I have a great team of people. I could never do it by myself.

AGW: Are there other avenues that you'd like to explore?

Eve: Definitely. I want a movie production company. I'd like to maybe get into writing if I could concentrate on that long enough, but I want to be a mother and a wife. So, there's a lot of things that I want to do.

AGW: What do you think you’ll need to concentrate on next?

Eve: Well, in the summer, I'll be on hiatus from the television show and I'll take a couple of months and get an album done to put out in the fall, but as far as the rest, I can't pick one over the other right now. I'm having fun doing them all.

AGW: What allows you the most creative control?

Eve: Honestly, I think the music just because that's where I come from. So, when I get into my music, everything that I've been through throughout the year, those three months, it's all there. Creatively, I'm making a song, or I'm coming up with a melody.

AGW: Your new album, how different is it going to be from your last one?

Eve: Lyrically, I don't think that there's going to be much difference. Dr. Dre is going to executive produce this next album. So, he brings out the complete best in me which I'm very excited about. I don't know. I think that only thing that's going to change is the subjects. We haven't done anything yet, but definitely, the style of music, the beats are going to be completely different.

AGW: What's your take on the fact that we see more and more rappers in film and television, is it a good thing or should they stick with the music?

Eve: I think that some of them should stick with the music. A lot of them are good though like Cube and Mos Def, I think is amazing as an actor. I think that right now it is kind of a fad, that movie studios are going to rappers and pop stars and putting them in the movies and I think that it'll weed itself out soon, and those who are really good will stay and those aren't won't.

AGW: What's it like being in a boy's club like the Barbershop cast?

Eve: It's cool. Ever since I was little, I've been one of those girls who's been a tomboy and always around guys and I like it. That's what I like about Terri. She's in this shop with all these guys, but it doesn't matter. She can hold her own and she doesn't care.

AGW: Okay, here’s a haircutter question. Have you ever had a bad haircut?

Eve: I've had some wild haircuts that were cute for then, but if I looked at a picture now, I'd probably say it was bad, but I can't ever remember saying, 'Oh my God, this is bad.' But I've had some crazy stuff.

AGW: If you could sit down with your I-pod or cd player, what would you listen to?

Eve: I listen to a lot of reggae. I listen to everything from Roots and Culture to Dance Hall and that's my favorite music.

AGW: How did it come back around to working with Dr Dre?

Eve: [laughs] I honestly couldn't even tell you. I started with Dre and it just didn't work out for some reason. I don't think that he knew what to do with me, and I think that at the time, I didn't know who I wanted to be as an artist and they shipped me to Rough Riders, which was cool. They developed me. I started working with Dre again and he did two songs on the last two albums that I did, and we just work good together. He just wanted me back.

AGW: What would be your idea of an ideal date, what would be fun for you?

Eve: You know what, I think that for me, I'm a home body. So, a good movie, maybe two or three good movies, some good food and good conversation. That's it.

AGW: How interested are you in pursuing a film career?

Eve: Completely. I love acting and I really enjoy my show, but I think that I enjoy film way more. So, I'd like to get more involved in film more.

AGW: Are you still having fun on the t.v. show?

Eve: It's fun, it's definitely fun. The first couple of weeks or the first couple of months were very hard. I wanted to quit. I was like, 'I made a bad decision,' but then, I finally got into that groove that I thought people were lying about. Now, I'm in the groove and it's good. We do a live audience one night out of the two days of taping. I'm better with it now. Before, I was really scared. I didn't want to mess up in front of an audience, but they love it when you mess up. So, now, I don't care.

AGW: Who are you dying to do a duet with or do a video with?

Eve: Musically, I would love to do something with Lauryn Hill and Outkast. Those are the two at the top of my list.

AGW: What about an actor, who would you like to pair up with?

Eve: Halle [Berry]. I would love, love, love to do something with her. She's just an amazing actress. She's done so many things, and she's become so many people and it's very believable. Nothing has ever looked like a stretch, like, 'Oh, why did she do that,' in my personal opinion anyway.

AGW: Would you like to do a secret agent thing, an action film?

Eve: Definitely. Yes. I need that. I would love to do some action, some stunts. Little stunts, not big ones. [Laughs] But I'd love to do something like that.

AGW: What's The Woodsman, your next film, about?

Eve: The Woodsman is a very dark film. I play this nosey secretary. Kevin Bacon's character is a pedophile. He comes back into the world and he's trying to get his life together and he's working at this job that I'm at, at a lumberyard. I just kind of need to know what's going on with him. I'm just nosey. I keep asking questions and no one will tell me. So, I finally find out what's going and I kind of blow the lid off of his life at the job and make it miserable. The film showed really well at Sundance.

AGW: What do you think that you do really well and what do you think that you do badly?

Eve: That’s a fun question. What do I think that I do really well? I don't know. I complain really well [Laughs]. And I can really shop. That's a shame. I have a problem.

AGW: The entertainment industry is full of fakes and users. How do you know who your true friends are?

Eve: That's the struggle of life [Laughs]. I follow my gut. Whatever my gut says, I think that it's right. I've been through so many things and I know that God has my back. That's just how I feel because if you didn't trust, you'd just be lonely.

AGW: Who out there will give you the most honest answer?

Eve: My mother, most definitely. If I'm stuck on anything, I call my mother.
