We're Hangin' With.....

Shanghai Knights' FANN WONG

by: Lynn B.

The lovely Fann Wong plays Jackie Chan's little sister in Shanghai Knights and she's no shrinking violet. As "Lin", Fann holds her own with some great martial arts action and in some fun flirty scenes with star Owen Wilson. In her native Singapore, Fann is a top Popstar and t.v. actress. We spoke with her recently about doing her first English-speaking role and working with Jackie and Owen. She plans to record another album this year and is continuing in her Singapore t.v. work.

AGW: What do you think about America?

Fann: I loved it when I was in New York. It was so alive. I loved the energy that the city has. Also, at the same time, I was worried about my safety because it's not like Singapore where you can walk down the street just like that.

AGW: How did you get the role in this film?

Fann: My manager sent in my audition tape with clips of me fighting and stuff like that. I guess that was what they were looking for. I flew to London to meet David Dobkin (the director) and discuss the script.

AGW: Did you ever have martial arts training?

Fann: For Shanghai Knights I had two weeks of intense training in Prague before the filming started. They offered to send Jackie's stunt people to Shanghai where I was working to train me but my schedule doesn't allow it. Actually I wasn't that nervous about it because I had done martial arts scenes before in my previous work. I thought it was going to be like the ones that I did but I realized that this is very different and they're very serious about the work so for the last two weeks I have body aches and am really tired.

AGW: You are in great shape. What do you eat before and after your workout?

Fann: I make sure I don't really eat before I work out. It's not good to have anything in the stomach before I work out. But after I work out, I eat anything that I like. Protein shakes, no.

AGW: How did Jackie teach you the choreography? He has a unique style.

Fann: Oh he nags! In the initial stage he felt that my fighting style is too graceful, too elegant. He'd nag, nag, nag. It's kind of scary sometimes. After a while, when I'd get it right, it was a big satisfaction to see a nod on Jackie's face. You get a nod from a Kung Fu master, it's great.

AGW: How did you develop the chemistry between you and Owen Wilson? Did you discuss the characters?

Fann: We didn't discuss anything about it. For the kissing scene, I was very nervous about it. I was worried if there was enough chemistry. After a few shots, I went over to David Dobkin and said 'how is it like'? He'd say 'yeah, you look comfortable. You're great'. I've never worked with a Western cast before. It's fun. Owen is a sweet guy, a nice guy, great to be around. He makes everything so easy.

AGW: Could you be attracted to a guy like Owen in real life?

Fann: Yes. He's very talented and that makes him very (hot) and attractive.

AGW: What is the biggest change from doing a lot of television then moving into movies?

Fann: It's like a luxury to be in a movie. For Shanghai Knights, I've been treated very well, got dresses and stuff like that but with t.v., no. The schedule is really tight. Like for this one I was reading lines with Owen and he's like 'Fann, look. I can remember my lines just reading them now'. I'm 'what are you talking about? You only do one scene a day and back home I have to do twenty scenes a day'. He's like 'Noooo'. That's a difference, the pace and so many hours we have to put in. Most of the time we have to work twenty-four hours in a day to finish a project in three months.

AGW: When you weren't working, what did you do?

Fann: Most of the time I'd be so tired mentally and physically. No clubbing, not really. I went to plays, theaters and stuff like that.

AGW: What's the new t.v. show you have coming out?

Fann: I'm in the midst of filming in parts of China. I'm doing a legendary folk tale, a period drama. I play a fairy in "Flying to the Moon". It's about this fairy who is very curious about the people of Earth and she comes down and wants to know all about the sufferings of the people here. And how she fell in love with a normal person and that's a 'no no' for the world up there. It's a romantic tragedy. 30 episodes. I've only been sleeping about three or four hours a day. When I go back it's about minus seventeen degrees Celsius. Snowing, so cold.

AGW: How did you get started in entertainment?

Fann: I was in school. I was modeling. One of the producers at a local t.v. station saw my t.v. commercials and asked me to be one of his female leads and that's how I joined acting. I never had an acting class before.

AGW: Do you have any causes you support?

Fann: I've done a few charities but nothing in particular. I believe in Anti-Piracy because it's really out of control back home. I try to raise awareness. (Note: She means she's against people stealing movies illegally and putting them on video to sell so that the actors and crew involved get no money).

AGW: When you are home you are a big famous person. How does it feel to come over where people don't recognize you as much?

Fann: I don't have an issue with that. It's nice to relax. I can do whatever I want. It's a nice change. I kind of enjoy it.

AGW: What kind of music do you like?

Fann: I listen to all kinds of music. Pop, oldies, Mandarin songs.

AGW: What was the biggest challenge of this film?

Fann: A lot of new challenges for me. This is my first English-speaking role and I didn't know how it would turn out and working with a different crew and cast. This is a great challenge. And Lin gets to not just do fighting but comedy and also got her own very emotional scenes.

AGW: What part of your character is like and not like you?

Fann: She's very determined. I'm very determined too. I'm independent too. She's quite independent and strong. In some ways I'm like her.
