Jenna Boyd:Keeping it Realby Lynn B.
Most recently young Jenna took on the challenge of playing Bailey Graffman, a sensitive girl with leukemia in the much-loved summer female empowering film Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. We caught up with the busy actress, who is also an inventor and champion figure skater, for a chat about “Pants”, her skating career, her bro and future plans. AGW: For playing Bailey, did you have to visit any hospitals or do any other research to find out about leukemia? Jenna: I did. I went to a hospital in Vancouver that had a lot of kids that had leukemia there. The guy that kind or ran it had a son die of leukemia. So it kind of helped us understand and the director’s assistant had cancer five years before the movie. I had a lot of good resources to help me. AGW: I hear that you invented something. Tell us about it. Jenna: First of all it was for my school work. It was 70 percent of my science grade. So I invented something called the Scripture Connector Projector. I got the idea from my mom. She had trouble making time for daily scripture. So what I made was this little box which is really small. You put it on your desk and it projects a daily inspirational message onto the wall. It changes manually at midnight. It’s pretty cool. AGW: How did you create the actual box? Jenna: We just made a model. We are working with a company called “By Kids For Kids” to make it a real product. AGW: I interviewed your brother for the “Shark Boy” film. Is he a year younger than you? Jenna: Yes he is fourteen months younger. AGW: What is the history of you guys? How did you end up in show biz? Jenna: When I was just two, my mother put me into a baby contest and my brother got dragged into it because I was doing it. Then we where in catalogues and then we started to do commercials. Now we do movies. it’s exciting. It’s just gone on from there. AGW: I read something about your figure skating. Did you think about going to the Olympics? Jenna: I still do that! Have been doing it since I was two as well. Now I am doing big double jumps. Not too long from now I will be doing triples. AGW: Are you thinking about doing this professionally, or are you going to try and do both careers? Jenna: I compete. AGW: How do you do all this because if you act, you are going to miss some meets. It must be kind of hard to do all this. Jenna: It is but we get up at five in the morning for skating so we kind of cram it all in. AGW: You should have been the one in Ice Princess; she’s a little older than you. How was hanging out and acting with Amber Tamblyn in “Pants”? Jenna: She is very funny to be around, Amber. She’s not goofing around but she’s got a sarcastic twist to her, It’s weird. She’s very fun, down to earth and a total joy to be around. She kind of lightened it up a little when we had those serious scenes. AGW: Who is your favorite actor and actress?
AGW: Is there a movie that you have seen recently that you liked a lot. Jenna: I saw War Of The Worlds. I really liked that. AGW: What kind of music to you like to listen to? I heard you like Jesse McCartney. Jenna: Yes I went to see him in concert for “Good Morning America”. Any teen music. AGW: Well that’s plenty. Do you have a favorite designer for clothes or do you care? Jenna: My friends are all into the designer stuff, but I have never really cared much about that. If it’s cute, you like it and buy it, but I don’t care. But I do like some of those designer purses. AGW: Hey those Dooney and Bourke ones are really cute. Jenna: Actually I have one. My grandmother bought it for me. My mom would NEVER get that for me. AGW: What was the best advice you were ever given, and who gave it to you? Jenna: Probably my Mom. She said ‘Do your best and that is all you can do. There are a lot of things you don’t have any control over’. AGW: What would your ideal vacation spot be and why? Jenna: I think it would be fun to go to Australia because the people are so friendly. It seems like a fun place to go, with the beaches. All the Australian people that have interviewed me have been so sweet. I think it is cool. AGW: If you couldn’t be an actress, what else would you like to be? Maybe it’s a figure skater? Jenna: Besides a figure skater….um..maybe a designer. I think that would be cool. I have these American Girl mini rooms. You can design your own room. The wall paper is magnetic and everything is magnetic. I like to do those, because I like to decorate stuff. AGW: Do you have any pets? Jenna: I do. I have a miniature Jack Russell Terrier and her name is Tippy. AGW: Any other critters? Jenna: I don’t have any other pets. I used to have cats. But we just have our miniature Jack right now. AGW: Have you put some thought into writing and directing some day? Jenna: I just think I am more interested in acting. I have friends that want to direct, but personally I like acting better. AGW: So how will you avoid growing up and getting bad press for partying like some of today’s older teen stars? Jenna: I really don’t want to be like that because that is just not me. I am not that kind of girl. I am definitely going to try as hard as I can not to turn out like that. I won’t. My parents are so concerned with balance that they really won’t let that get to me. AGW: What advice would you give young people that want to get into acting? Jenna: I would give them the advice to try as hard as you can. If you don’t get what you want the first few times, then don’t be too discouraged because, like I said before, there are many things you don’t have control of. Like, if someone does not look like you and you are supposed to be related to them in the movie, then that is something you really can’t control. Just do your best and be honest with yourself. AGW: So between you and your brother, who is the peacemaker and the troublemaker? Jenna: We are both very, very guilty of fighting with each other. I think that my brother is the troublemaker, but I think every sibling thinks that the other is worse. That is normal, I guess. AGW: So what is next for you? Are you shooting something now? Jenna: I am not shooting anything right now and nothing is set to be filmed, but we got stuff cookin’. AGW: Is there something you would like to say to your fans, or others that will see your movies? Jenna: Everybody go see Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Pants = Love. |
