2/12//03 We're Hangin' With..... JENNIFER GARNER by: Lynn B.
AGW: Why did you get into acting and especially all the physical stunts? J: I've always been obsessed with acting and since I figured out that it existed, I've always wanted to be on stage in some way. When I was younger I would seek out any opportunity to learn what I could do to be better on stage or do behind the scenes. I did start out as a ballet dancer and that does start you off with a certain amount of discipline and understanding of your body and pushing your limitations. So when I first started fighting for 'Alias' and using my body in this way, this whole world opened up to me. That I would have an aptitude for this and such a passion for it was such a surprise to me. I was kind of blown away by how much I would love the days when I would fight on 'Alias'. I wasn't getting enough. I like to train. I like to pick it apart and do the nitty gritty work. That's why I wanted to do Daredevil. AGW: Did you know a lot about the comic book character of Elektra beforehand? J: I grew up in a family of three girls so we read Seventeen. We read 'Little House on the Prairie'. We didn't read comic books. I wish that I had because I think that Elektra is incredibly empowering. Now, when I meet women that say 'it's because of Elektra that I thought I could live on my own or became physically fit' or whatever, I think that's a pretty amazing thing for a comic book character to give a young woman. Now, of course, I've read her entire saga and her story is pretty epic. She's a very dark woman. I'm waiting to have a little bit of time because I might branch off and read X-Men or The Hulk. I got into it. AGW: There is talk of a spin-off Elektra movie. Would that be possible? J: Elektra's story is epic. There's talk of a spin-off but I don't know any more than you do. I'm open for it. I would miss the big red devil if I had to do one on my own but, as long as my stunt double is up for it, I'm up for it. I'm going back to 'Alias' so I'm happy. AGW: Did they make a toy Elektra? J: There is a toy for Elektra. I haven't seen this young lady yet. There is also an 'Alias' action figure. I'm about to be like fifteen action figures at once but I haven't seen any of them. AGW: Did you think that you could do all the action stuff for this film? J: I was so obsessed with fighting after my year of "Alias" and so into learning as much as I could that I really wanted to take it to another level. I had to learn to fight with weapons. I had to learn to fight on wires and just fighting every day all summer just kind of built my confidence. AGW: Were your Chinese trainers tough on you? J: Master Cheung Yuen and his men are the best in the world at what they do and Ben and I felt so lucky to be working with them. They absolutely demanded precision and discipline. I was working on 'Alias' right up till the day I did Daredevil so we didn't have time to get together for months beforehand. We were under the gun from the minute the movie started. We were learning fights and doing them at night and then sleeping until about noon and then working with Master Cheung Yuen and his men for three hours on our playground fight which is our kind of big courtship meeting/dance/flirtation fight. That was so fun to do and we would work on that every single day for six weeks, Saturdays and Sundays, no exceptions. I had so much respect for how much Ben just dug in. That made me want to elevate how hard I was working. I just adore that man for what we went through together on those days. AGW: These guys sound really strict. J: Our instructors were not the kind of men who would coddle you and say what a great job you did today and, gosh, that's so much better than last time. We would do something we felt was flawless and they would go 'ah, ah, ah, ah, no,no, slow, slow. Start again'. Ben and I were the only two that really spoke English in the room. There was an interpreter there but he and I would just look at each other and go (whispering) 'I thought that was pretty good. Did you?'. 'Yeah but okay. Let's do it again'. AGW: Do you know your limitations when doing stunt work? J: There were a couple of aerials in the movie. I can't do an aerial, even if you put a wire on me, I don't know the first thing about doing an aerial so Shawna, my stunt double does that. Or on 'Alias" if there's a thing falling down the stairs, I have no desire to fall down a flight of stairs. I only do what's fun (laughs). That's almost everything but getting hit by a car 'Shawna, have a good day. I'll be right here. Don't get hurt. Love you see you later'. AGW: Would you say goodbye to "Alias" for a good movie role? J: As long as "Alias" is picked up, I'm going home to a family that loves me, who I learn from. I'm working in a company. It's like really great paying regional theater. It's what I wanted to do, have mentors and learn from them. And absolutely every day that I work, I learn something from [my co-stars]. I have so much respect for them as actors and they write beautiful stuff for me there. As long as the writing stays at the level that it is, I would always be happy to go back to "Alias". AGW: How was kissing Ben Affleck? J: It's a pleasure to kiss Ben Affleck and if he showed up right now, I guess we could show you how very good we are at that very thing . No! (laughs). It's just part of the scene. It's always awkward the first time that you kiss someone you've become friends with on set because you don't realize how intimate a kiss is. But, at the same time, there are maybe a hundred people around and that does wipe away any notions you might have. When you are on set it's very insular. It's just you and him and he and I had been through a lot. At that point he was not on the cover of the tabloid so it was just an actor and an actor in a scene together. AGW: How does your husband [actor Scott Foley] handle that? J: Scott does understand what I do for a living. He is an actor and he certainly has spent his days rolling around and will again. I get what that is for him and he gets what that is for me and it's really not nearly the deal that it would seem from the outside. AGW: Do you really think Ben is the "hottest" man alive? J: (laughs). Ben is [hot] because he's so kind. Because he has a great sense of humor and because he's six four and tall, dark and handsome and all that stuff. Sure, he'd make my list but I'd laugh at it at the same time. He's a big goofball. AGW: Did you both feel silly on the set in the red and black leather outfits? J: We felt just this side of ridiculous a lot of the time. Especially when you're dangling from thin air on a wire. Yeah, I think we kind of laughed our way through the movie. It was my summer job so I was definitely going to have a good time and I think Ben always has a good time so all of us laughed a lot especially if Colin [Farrell] was around. They you're guaranteed a good time. What is your work-out regimen? J: I work out about an hour, not really more ever, a day, most days. It ends up being about 5 days a week. So, everyday that I can whether that's a four in the morning or five in the morning. I do cardio and weights and kind of circuit so that my heart rate is always up. A lot of stretching and a lot of injury preventive things with rotator cuffs, and knees and backs. I have a great trainer Valerie Waters and she's been with me for two years. I'm so grateful for her. AGW: You stole your scene in Catch Me If You Can from Leonardo. Have you gotten good feedback from doing that character? J: Catch Me If You Can has been nothing but magic from the minute it came into my life till right now. It just makes me smile. Imagine, after auditioning steadily for seven years, suddenly Steven Spielberg is calling to offer you a role in his movie. I actually couldn't believe I was on the set with him and Leo and the scene was so much fun to shoot. Steven was having so much fun directing it, the whole place just lights up. He seems to love it so much. Then to have the movie come out and think that it's a much fun as I thought it was and I'm actually in it. And to go back to 'Alias' after the Christmas break and have my crew say 'Jen, we saw the movie, we're so excited'. It just makes me happy.
