We're Hangin' With.....

JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT

by Lynn B.

She's the gal most guys 14 to 21 would love to date but she says nobody calls! She loves doing stunts but she's a klutz. We wanted to know more about this hot star and her role as a Bond-style heroine in the new fantasy/comedy/action film The Tuxedo. We first see Jennifer as she is being carried around the hotel hall by co-star Jackie Chan. Finally she escapes and enters wearing a designer Armani Ladies-style tux, gold and black dangle "gypsy" earrings and carrying a big bag of M&M's which she passes around to the journalists in the room. She's very high energy, funny, friendly and speaks very fast about her fear of drowning, claustrophobia, balancing her music and acting careers, her love of Latino men and the fact that purple M&M's are "un-American".

Jennifer: (Passing around bag of M&Ms) Want some? I need a sugar rush!

AGW: This is like a Bond film gone wacky. Do you have a favorite Bond film?

Jennifer: I don't know that much about the Bond movies but I've always wanted to be a Bond Girl. But, now that I have been a "Chan Girl", which is the new trend that I'm convinced I'm starting, I'd rather be a Chan Girl because it's a lot more fun.

AGW: Did you seek out this project? How did it come to you?

Jennifer: I was in my agent's office and they said there is this movie about a wacky, magical tuxedo. They sent me the script, I read it and thought it was really good. They still had no guy attached. I went in to meet with them and they had Kevin [Donovan, the director] in the office and they were like 'It looks like Jackie Chan is gonna play the guy'. I said 'What?' I was like 'can I do catering in the movie? I want to be in the movie. I have to be in the movie. I love Jackie Chan!'. I went into my whole love of martial arts and how I grew up with his movies. So, very shortly after that they decided they would put the two perkiest people in Hollywood in a movie together.

AGW: What was it like working with him?

Jennifer: It was great. We had so much fun. He's possibly the greatest man that I've ever met. He's so kind. He was really supportive and wanted me to look cool in the movie so that my friends would talk to me and think I was special.

AGW: We hear you have a fear of water.
Jennifer: We had these different ways they were going to do the drowning scene like the guy at the beginning of the movie with a bag over his head [which fills with water and drowns him]. Well that's what they were going to do to me and I said 'ooookay'. Listen, I really want to be in the movie but will so go to Utah and make jam if you're gonna put a bag over my head and drown me for an entire afternoon. They were going to have me in a tank or in a waterbed situation so when you lifted up the mattress, I was under glass drowning. I was like 'let's find the least possible way that I can drown in water'.

AGW: Where does that fear come from?

Jennifer: I'm a little bit claustrophobic and there's something about being held beneath water. The biggest thing about claustrophobics is they're control freaks and basically and I'm a total control freak. Even when I was a kid, you know how kids will play and dunk your head under water? I would lose it. I'd be hyperventilating and couldn't handle it. I told Kevin this. His solution was 'let's throw her in a gigantic pool with a big 200 pound guy for nine hours one night and just hold her head underwater'! I'm like 'That's great. Thanks, Kev. You rock, buddy. Thanks so much'.

AGW: Did that cure you of your fear?

Jennifer: No. I hyperventilated and had like a heart attack and we had to explain to the entire crew what was wrong with me. When you're standing in four-inch heels in between the shallow and deep end of a pool and a 200 pound man grabs your body and throws you into the water, it's freaky. No matter how comfortable you are, it's terrifying. Kevin was like, 'Whenever you get uncomfortable, just get out'. We literally hit the water and I was 'okay' and I got out and sat on the side of the pool (she makes crying sounds). The crew was like "what's wrong?' I was like "I can't be underwater'. And they're like 'Kevin Donovan is the meanest man ever'. Kevin has never been so glad a scene was over. But now I've kind of gotten over my fear.

AGW: How much did you have to train for the stunts in the film?

Jennifer: Not that much. I worked out for about a week and a half before I went to Toronto kind of doing basic karate, boxing, wire training, lifting weights. I just wanted to try to get some muscle going to pad any injuries that might come my way. And then Jackie trained me literally 15 minutes before every stunt. It was fun. It went a lot like this 'You… (she mumbles in fake Chinese) kick, punch, okay…camera, rolling, action!' I'd be like 'Oh my God. That was not in English, nor was it slow nor do I understand anything that I'm supposed to be doing'. Then he'd go 'Cut… YOU…' and I was like 'Slow down, Jackie. Show me'. He'd have to show me two or three times before I'd get it because, for him it's so easy and fast that he didn't think that the rest of us would need like a little extra time to learn. I only fight men in this movie. That's so cool. It's empowering.

AGW: Did you get any injuries?

Jennifer: Tons. I hurt both my knees. I pulled my hamstring. I broke my middle finger. I broke my ankle and was in a cast for two weeks. I cracked my head open. I was hit in the face with a night stick. But it was sooo cool. In a Jackie Chan movie what else are you supposed to do but get smashed? All the things I did that I got injured in, Kevin cut out of the movie.

AGW: You've done a lot of comedy physical action. Is that something you like doing?

Jennifer: I like doing it but I'm very klutzy. People find this out after they hire me. I warn people. I told Kevin. 'It's really great that you want me in this movie but maybe you should make my character afraid to do stunts because I'm kind of a klutz and I'm going to get hurt and you're going to get mad'.

She pours more M&M's out of the bag.

Jennifer: Why are there purple M&Ms? (We explain, it's a new color). That's very un-American and upsetting.

AGW: How do you balance your acting and your music?

Jennifer: I told everybody I want to promote my album and Tuxedo as much as possible this year. They've made an amazing schedule. The album is a rock/pop/soul album all mixed together that Meredith Brooks produced. I co-wrote all but three songs on the record. It's called "Bare Naked". It's coming out October 8th. It's not a deep record. I didn't sit down to send a message, just make songs that, hopefully, people would remember.

AGW: Would you go on tour as a singer?

Jennifer: Sure. I'm not a person who would go on tour for very long though. I really like to be at home. I struggle with really wanting to work and taking enough time off in between to not miss being 23, 24, 25. I don't want to look back when I'm 80 and only have the movies and the stuff I did in my career to talk about. I want to have a life to talk about. Romantic nights in Paris.

AGW: When you were 13 or 14, who were the rock stars that you had a crush on?

Jennifer: New Kids on the Block. Also, I've had an obsession since I was 8 years old and saw him take Marcia Brady to the prom, a crush on Davy Jones. I just absolutely love him. I used to have New Kids on the Block sheets and I would only sleep on my Joey McIntyre pillow because I was convinced that somehow, at night, he was kissing me softly while I was sleeping. Journey's my favorite rock band

AGW: You are so bubbly. What is your natural high or anti-drug in life?

Jennifer: Life is my natural high. Just getting to live it. I feel very lucky that I get to do so much. It's kind of a high every single day. And ice cream is a good choice…or maybe M&M's.

AGW: You went to the Latin Grammys. Do you like that sort of music?

Jennifer: I'm obsessed with Latin people. I love them. I'm convinced that I'm part of a Latin family and my mom doesn't know it. I salsa dance. I put on smoky make-up and I try to be [hot].

AGW: Have you dated Latin guys?

Jennifer: No, but if one called me up, I'd be there in a heartbeat! (Okay all you Julios and Juans, get on that cell phone!) Juanes is so cute. He told me that I was beautiful at the Latin Grammy awards. I nearly fell on the floor in convulsions. He's the cutest little thing.

AGW: What's next on your plate?

Jennifer: Hopefully at the end of this year, I'm going to London to star in and produce the first movie for my production company. It's a romantic drama. My company is called Love-Spell Entertainment.

AGW: Do you just try to ignore all the false press about your life?

Jennifer: It makes my real life seem so much more exciting than it actually is because I apparently don't have time for a career because I date 85 people in one day. I'm not dating anyone which is the really funny part and I couldn't begin to go through all the names they talk about because half of the people I don't even know or have never met. The other people are people I'm friends with or have literally run into in the street and gone 'Oh, hey' and they snap a picture and we're taking bubble baths at the Four Seasons.

AGW: Why haven't you hooked up with anyone?

Jennifer: I always have time for a little romance but, to be honest with you, the fact that I'm always written about as going out with everyone, might be hurting my game. They make me out to be this total tart and I can't imagine a guy going, 'so, you're not busy tonite with the other 75. You want to go out with me?'. I think I've got to disappear a while and people will have to stop writing about it and then maybe guys will start asking me out again.

AGW: You are close to your mom. What is mother's day like with her?

Jennifer: The selfish part of me wants to take her away for the day but my mom's really popular. Everybody that meets my mom falls in love with her. We're just at home and everybody sends her flowers. We try to make her feel important all year.

AGW: What do you do in your down time?

Jennifer: Nothing fancy. I wake up every morning and get to play big movie star or big rock star and that's great but when I'm off I try to be nobody really. I really just want to eat pizza and hang out with my mom.

AGW: Did you get to keep any of the clothes from this film?

Jennifer: No and Jackie got to keep two of his tuxedos!!

AGW: You are really hot with young teens.

Jennifer: I was not really popular when I was that age in school because I was always 'freak, entertainer girl' and I never had a place to fit in. So if I'm making up for it now by having those people actually care anything about me, I think that's really cool. I hope they like this movie.
