WE'RE HANGIN' WITH....
N'SYNC's JOEY FATONE: The Funny One

Joey Fatone, the "out there" member of N'Sync, has been before film cameras with small parts in The Brothers and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. But in the new comedy/romance On the Line, he has a co-starring role with fellow group member Lance Bass. The Brooklyn, New York native can identify with his character Rod's struggles in a cover band playing heavy-metal style rock. "I actually have "Journey's Greatest Hits" '70's '80's, that I listen to all the time believe it or not. I guess that's not that heavy. To some people it is, depending on your age. Some say, oh, that's rock and roll. Heavy Metal I like a little bit of "Def Leopard", little bit of "Guns and Roses" stuff like that.

As a high schooler, Joey sang with a doo-wop group called "Big Guys" and still gets together with the guys occasionally. "It was an a Capella group and we did '50's doo-wop music. It was me, my friend Eric, Joel and a kid by the name of "Fonzie". His name's Luis, they called him Luis Fonzie. He's actually an artist on the Universal label and he's doing really well. He's from Puerto Rico. He's big there. The Big Guys group went over to Puerto Rico and sang with him on one of his concerts".

When we sat down for a sec recently with Joey in L.A., he was keeping up his usual casual image in red backwards baseball cap and green tee-shirt. The funny, jokester image still sticks (we learned that his favorite film of all time is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) but, when we asked him about the new baby he has at home, he shifted into responsible proud papa mode. "She's six months old. You're changing diapers and then changing your clothes for a quick change for a show. I've been blessed. She's great. You have a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. You can't go out as much as you used to. But obviously that's something that I choose to do. You look at her and sometimes I'll think, 'She looks a little bit like her mother today'. And sometimes I'll think she looks a little bit like me. It's amazing how when they look at you it's just the best thing in the world that they have ever seen. It's a great feeling to have that unconditional love."

We've yet to see Joey's other film work. He described it for us. The Brothers was an independent but they changed the name. I play a real small, tiny role in that. I play a liquor clerk that gets beat up and the other one is My Big Fat Greek Wedding. If you see the movie you get the title. It's with Plato Productions and I got to work with people like Lanie Kazan, Michael Constantine, Andrea Martin from SCTV also John Corbett so it was really cool. I play a guy called Angelo, the lead's cousin".

Is the singer/songwriter up for more film work? "I wouldn't say I'd play the lead, but I would love to do dramatic roles. It gives me a chance to expand my acting horizons. It would be exciting. I would love to do some fantasy, some action, some horror or suspense".

On the Line is a comic romance but also a buddy picture. It seems that Joey and movie pals CQ and James Bulliard are doing some wacky winging at times. We wanted to know if Joey ad-libbed or contributed. "I came up with the scene with Chyna (the wrestling heroine), the arm wrestling scene. People were always saying, 'Oh, you're dating Chyna' and me and her are friends so I thought it would be a funny thing to do in the montage with all the dating. That was pretty funny. We did ad-libbing but the writers were so wonderful. Every time I would say 'This would be a cool idea' they would try to add it here and there. They gave me a lot of freedom, especially our director Eric Bross".

Joey gets to shine as a solo performer in the film although the music isn't his usual style. "It was weird because it gave me a chance to show people 'oh, he really can sing'. I was singing in a bar so it's not the greatest. Those were supposed to be fun things. Whatever came out when I was recording in the studio, that's what we used. Just to be funny". Joey hasn't written anything for the new album but he's busy promoting this film and getting the planned April N'Sync tour launched "We're downsizing it from stadiums to arenas. A lot of the songs that we didn't do on the last tour, we'll do on this one. Whole new show."

Realizing that Joey is a New Yorker, we had to ask him about the recent tragedy. His flirty smile disappeared and he lowered his eyes. "It was devastating and then nerve-wracking because my mom called me on the phone and told me what happened. I was at home in Florida, I ran downstairs, watched it on t.v., tried to call my friends and family and couldn't get through. One of my friends is a firefighter and he's been helping out there. The stuff he's been seeing…. (puts his head down). I was like 'how can you do that? You must be completely an emotional wreck'. He said 'Well, you'd be surprised what you can do and the bravery you can have to help people out'."

"My immediate family and relatives, thank God they're all right but one friend of mine Danny passed away. He was a carpenter, was also for Backstreet Boys. He was on his way home in the plane and one of our bodyguards, his sister was in the building and had third degree burns but she got out okay. It seems like everyone in the United States knew someone in that building because of all the companies there. It's great how everybody's been coming together". Does he think that a comedy/romance is appropriate movie faire right now? "This movie lets everybody, for 80 minutes, not think about that. It takes you on a little journey, romance and wanting to find that 'love at first sight' girl. It's a feel good movie".

Joey hopes that fans will enjoy the film and take away a little lesson. "If you have love and passion for something so much, don't give up on it. Kevin had the love and passion to find his girl and Rod (Joey's character) had his love of writing music and was always afraid to put his music out there and finally he gets the guts because he saw what Kevin did. Of course Kevin's an idiot for not getting her phone number".

Has Joey learned anything from the movie experience? "How big your nose looks on screen! It's tremendous! Obviously with time going by, no matter how old you are you're growing and learning. For me, it was learning to do a character and be silly. You watch and study and develop your own little things here and there and comedy is even harder than drama is. It's all in the timing and delivery. You think something could be hilarious and you see it on screen and it's like 'what am I doing? That's stupid'… humm that was everything in the movie".
