8/12/02 We're Hangin' With........Those Blue Crush surfer babes...... KATE BOSWORTH AND MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ! By: Lynn B.
Universal Studios sent us to Hawaii to get a taste of the waves ourselves. Your reporter learned how to surf (sorta) and got the full impact of the beauty of the ocean and this exciting sport where girl surf pros are just starting to get the credit they deserve! In our seaside interview, Michelle and Kate revealed that, although athletic (Kate is an award-winning equestrian and Michelle is into bungee jumping and rollerblading), neither woman had set toe on surfboard before shooting the film. Part of the lure of the sport is the adrenaline rush. The poster announces "If you want to feel the rush, you have to take the risk!". Both women had some gnarly near-death experiences. "There were a few times where I feared for my life", says Michelle. "YOU try it with the surf lead wrapped around your neck and submerging you into the water. At first I thought 'radical, dude, bodacious', whatever. I can do this. But I have this newfound respect for surfers". Michelle became enamored of the lifestyle. "Surfing is so powerful, man. Do you know how amazing it is to surf the waters of the world? These surf chicks don't care if or where they eat or sleep. It's all about the surf". Kate was a stranger in a strange land. "I lived on the East coast for the most part of my life and the surf there never gets above your ankles". None-the-less, she learned to walk the walk. "Short boarding is so much more difficult than long boarding. It's smaller and squirrelly. The biggest moment for me was when I rode my first wave. The balance on a board is just as critical as the balance on a horse". She had a close call that frightened the actors and producers. "A big board went up and slammed me square on the head. It knocked me out. The water safety guy just carried me out. I went to the hospital and got a scan but my philosophy is 'get back on the horse', literally, and that's what I brought to surfing". The film's surf scenes are awesome but, at the core, it's a girl-bonding fest with romance. Kate's kissing scenes with co-star hottie Matt Davis were convincing but not "real". Rumor has it that she's seeing one of the surf instructors from the film. She shared her secret for a great cinema smooch. "Those Starbucks' mints that rip your mouth out they're so strong. Within a couple of hours you're still minty fresh". Her dream co-star would be that "Bourne-again" dude Matt Damon. "Well, Michelle thinks Paul [Walker] is hot but Matt is a really good person. That's my type. He rides horses. That works for me". Michelle says she's not in love at present but admits an attraction to Matthew McConaughey in Reign of Fire. "He buffed up for that. I was checking him out. I saw him at the Stunt Awards once. He's cute, man". She saw a hot guy at a local Hawaiian market called, appropriately, "Dudeland". "I do a triple take on this guy and I'm like 'Holy xxxx, this guy is ripped'. He turns around and he's eighty years old"! The two women's
backgrounds, approaches to acting and life priorities are quite different.
Kate, born in Boston, has been accepted to Princeton and has deferred
twice to pursue her acting career. "I was very sold on education.
I wrote the dean a letter. 'I really want to go to your school. Please
don't kill me'. I have a spot reserved in 2003". Kate will be seen next as a hard partying college coed in Rules of Attraction, a twisted tale by Pulp Fiction author Roger Avary. Michelle, who hates the audition process, "I hate being judged, man", is weighing offers and gets a natural high when finding neighborhood kids at her door asking if she really raced those cars in The Fast and the Furious. "Hey, are those your rims? Does your car go fast?". Despite differences, the women have forged a bond that includes co-star model/actress and expert surfer Sanoe Lake and young co-star Mika Boorem. "We've had completely different backgrounds", says Kate, "but we're really good-hearted people which is important to me. We're really strong women and that's what we appreciate about each other".
