9/17/02 We're Hangin' With..... KATE HUDSON
AGW: Was it hard to fit in with the cast and crew that had been working in the desert for months before you joined the film?
AGW: What were some of the challenges you faced playing Ethne? Kate: Struggling with why she makes the decisions that she makes and not necessarily being able to relate to it now in real life. I had to believe it and portray it honestly. It was important to people of that stature to hold their dignity, their status and their reputation. When a man that you'll marry is somebody that you think will live up to your father's expectations, now a hero with lineage and tradition, and he doesn't want to fight for his country, in that day and age, that was a big no no. And then you sacrifice love and end up regretting it. AGW: Was it difficult maintaining the English accent? You didn't go all Cockney or anything. Kate: No. Well it's RP, it's upper crust, a highly educated accent. It's not [in Cockney accent] all right then. It's not like the [Rolling] Stones. It's different. Interestingly enough, a very proper accent was more Americanized in those days. AGW: Did you miss the company of having other women in the cast? Kate: No. [laughs] Cuz I like boys. I have three brothers and no sisters so I feel comfortable with guys. Being in Almost Famous I felt real comfortable with the guys and with "The Black Crowes" ( her husband Chris Robinson's band) you're around a lot of guys so, no. Women always have issues with each other but these past two movies that I've done, the one with Naomi Watts, we had an incredible time together. We had so much fun. That was probably my first experience enjoying another actress and becoming really good friends, other than working on Bob Altman's movie with Liv (Tyler). But, there's tension sometimes with girls. AGW: Did this ever happen to you in real life, two guys vying for your attentions? Kate: Ha. All the time no. When I was single, there was that idea of when it rains it pours and then it's like a drought. It's like what am I doing wrong and then all of a sudden there are guys and they're all calling and this is great. But I've never been involved in a love triangle. I'm too much of a goodie two shoes to be like that. AGW: You've made great choices in your career so far. Do you just always do things that you love? Kate: I have an agent that I really respect. And I have an amazing team of people who help me and it allows me to be able to make right decisions and feel good about it. One of the reasons why Chris and I fell so in love is that we believe that I'm not willing to compromise what I love to do by making decisions based on what people think I'm supposed to be doing. And so I'm just going to remember to try to make good movies, hopefully and enjoy them, enjoy the process. You can get so carried away with what other people perceive you as and it's not true. AGW: Do you know, when you're done with a part, that you've nailed it? Kate: [shakes head] No. Because I don't concern myself with me. I'm not going like 'I did it, man.' I look at it like, 'I hope I made my director happy. I hope I did my job as an actor'. Instead of taking it upon yourself to only do what you're supposed to do in that story, you allow the director to tell his story. I hope I've lived up to his expectations of how he saw the movie. AGW: What
did you think about the music in the film? Kate: I loved the music in this movie. It's a beautiful score. I didn't even pay attention to some of the music because it just fit in well with the film. It told its own story. You know how sometimes, you listen to music in a movie and it totally takes you outside of anything that's going on? It's patronizing. I thought the music in this movie fit wonderfully. AGW: How is your husband Chris? Kate: Great, happy. On tour, lovin' it. He's been having great shows. AGW: He's said you're quite the singer. Kate: He definitely thinks I should. Right now, I love writing music. I play the guitar but I think of it more as a hobby. When and if I do decide to do something with music, I'd have to be very committed to it. I have a little different take on music than most people do. If I'm gonna do it, I'd go on the road and I can't even see myself doing that at all right now. AGW: What do you two listen to? Kate: "If I Could Only Remember My Name", David Crosby. It's one of my favorite albums. My favorite is "Laughing", the Joni Mitchell song. We love "The Incredible String Band". We're really into it. We listen to a lot of John Harding.. He sang "Dolphins" but a really beautiful version of it. We've been really into folk music lately and "The Tower Recordings", kids from Brooklyn. It's like '60's psychedelic music. Chris travels with like 200 CD's. AGW: What's next for you? Kate: I'm doing Rob Reiner's next movie.
