We're Hangin' With.....

KATE HUDSON

by: Lynn B.

A ray of sunshine just popped in and blinded me….oh, wait, it's Kate Hudson. The blonde, blue-eyed, upbeat actress just entered the room to chat about her romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. Tucking her jean-clad legs under her in the chair and straightening her beige-beaded Chanel blouse, Goldie's daughter is ready to charm and tell us all about her family and husband, her co-star, give advice on how to keep a guy and why she's glad she's off the dating circuit.

Kate and co-star Matthew McConaughey met once at a premiere and never chatted but the two got on great on set. "He reminded me of somebody I might have grown up with. He's so crazy and easy", says Kate. "He's very passionate and totally insane in the best way. He makes you laugh and sometimes you don't understand half the things that are coming out of his mouth but I enjoyed every moment of working with him". McConaughey got tired of hotel living and pulled up to the set in a large tour bus he borrowed from Sandy Bullock. Kate explains, "I'd show up to work and there he'd be brushing his teeth, 'good mornin''. We put down Astroturf and started buying him little pools and stuff", Kate giggles, "It was just so funny. He does wacky things".

The scene in the film in which Matthew's character teaches Kate how to ride a motorcycle wouldn't happen in real life. Kate reveals, "I can ride a motorcycle too. I learned on a Yamaha, the little dirt bikes, then I went on to a Harley. It was really heavy but the stunt coordinator Jack Gill showed up with a pink Harley and I went 'that's great!'. I learned how to drive that. Then when I got on the Triumph for this film, it was so much lighter that I actually could really drive it. I love riding motorcycles".

Some of Kate's favorite scenes in the film involve a very wiry, tiny dog, a pooch that was her idea. "I said 'let's get a Chinese Crested because they're funny' and I have a friend who has one of them. I love animals so much that I look at that dog and say 'you're so ugly that you're the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life'. They're very funny dogs and they're really smart. There were two, Harry and Izzy, they were twins. I had to carry them around a lot. It was really fun. Another fun but difficult scene in the film involved being angry and singing "You're so Vain". "Part of the reason why I'm up there (singing) is because I do love this guy. I want to be with this guy but he made me so mad", Kate frowns. "It was hard for me to get to that place where I'm singing a song and trying to be as honest as possible and also in front of like 250 people. This is the most embarrassing thing. I didn't want to play it like I was hammered but just getting there. How do you make a scene like that organic and not posed, not so set up?"

The film holds a mirror up to the things women do to guys consciously or unconsciously. Kate totally identified and admitted to her own dating no, no's in the past, like driving by a guy's house constantly. "I think when people see the movie they're going to go 'Aaaah, I totally did that'". When the actress compares her life with Black Crowes rocker Chris Robinson to another scene in the film, she allows that it would go differently in her relationship. "If I'm at a game and wanted a hot dog, I'd say 'Chris, honey, I'm sooo hungry'. And he'd go 'Well, go get yourself a hotdog'. And I'd say 'YOU, go get me a hotdog'. He'd probably go do it but a lot of girls don't realize, 'maybe I should just get up and get my own dog'. In the beginning of a relationship I think that's completely detrimental. When the honeymoon's over, like mine is, we order each other around all the time", she laughs.

Kate goes on tour with her husband as often as she can. She'll fly to him for a weekend but plans to accompany him on a summer tour this year. After playing a groupie in Almost Famous, we wanted to know if Kate was ready to really hit the road. "It can be hard sometimes but I'm used to traveling. I traveled my whole life. A part of me is addicted to it. There are always ladies everywhere but Chris was never into that. He would just go into his back lounge and listen to music".

The beautiful actress admits that she wasn't really on the prowl for a mate when she met her husband. "I was okay being alone. I wasn't somebody who always needed to be in a relationship. I was out with my girlfriends in New York having a great time and boom! There he was", she beams. What's the best Kate relationship advice? "The problem a lot of women have is they think they have to dress to impress and be mysterious and play the rule book. I always think that if you are completely yourself and having a good time, you'll find that guy. He'll find you and that all comes with just being honest". Theirs was a whirlwind romance. "We just kind of met and that was it. Every rule went out the window. We were telling each other we loved each other by the fourth day. I moved in in a week".

We wondered how Kate's parents Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (Kurt raised Kate, not her birth dad Bill Hudson) felt about her moving in with a rock star. "Both of my parents are like 'Oh Katy, go do what you've got to do.' That's just always how they have been". Goldie has been married twice and Kurt once and Kate stresses that, when she wanted to marry Chris, they were supportive. "I don't think they ever questioned it. If you knew Chris, and if you saw us together, there is not one person I know that doesn't get it. I got really lucky really young is how I look at it. It put me so at peace".

We spoke with Kurt recently and learned that he's extremely proud of Kate and her man. "There's a guy who is irresistibly charming and real and he's funny. He's smart. We differ on a lot of stuff but he's his own man. You understand why a girl like Katy would fall in love with him. They're a fun, volatile couple", the actor confides. "Where they're going to end up, who knows but I understand why she wants to be with him and he wants to be with her. Makes sense. With Katy, I never worry about her. I worry about the guy. Heads up, buddy, you don't know what your chewing off here. It's going to be a little more than you figured on. She's not gonna hold back. She's that way with Chris".

Kate isn't worried about being compared to her mom when she does comedies. "To me, she's my mommy. She popped me out and raised me and so I don't think of things like that. Yes, of course, my mother is probably one of the greatest female comediennes of all time and that makes me proud but more important are the things she's taught us as a mom. What more could you ask for"?

Parental advice also avoided the acting issue and went straight for the heart. "My parents told me 'if you ever believe anything anybody ever tells you about who you are, what you are, your image or if they hate you or love you, you're going to be miserable. You do your job no matter what you do, you do it the best you can and you go home and really concern yourself with your homelife because that's where people blossom as people. Not when you're being berated or elated'.

For the first time in family history, Kurt, Goldie and their kids are living far apart. Kurt and Goldie moved to Vancouver, Canada to support son Wyatt's interest in playing hockey. "It's been very difficult for us because it's the first time we've ever really been apart". Kate's sunny face is clouded momentarily. "Ever since they moved to Vancouver we haven't seen enough of my little brother and my older brother went to do Dawson's Creek and he was gone for so long in North Carolina. And then Boston is in Ithaca, New York studying Buddhism and we've all been separated. It's funny because I was always the one that was gone. I was the one who was away. I finally come back to L.A. and do two movies in a row here and everybody's gone. It's been hard for all of us. We all travel to go see each other all the time". With all the traveling, it's not surprising that, if Kate were to write a "How to" article like her character in the film, it would have a travel motif. "Probably something about how to pack. How to pack your bag".

Meanwhile, for Valentine's Day, Chris will be on the road while Kate is working but she's got high hopes. "He has a day off on Valentine's day, so I think he better get on a plane or I might be upset"...... Watch out, Chris.
