4/26/02 We're Hangin' With....SPIDERMAN'S CRUSH: MARY JANE WATSON... KIRSTEN DUNST
Kirsten started in the film business so young and then hit the teen movie circuit. "I've been pretty lucky with the movies that I've done. Even if it was a teen film, people seem to have gotten more out of it than other ones so I've been lucky and blessed and made some smart choices and (it's also) being proud of what you're doing. I think that shows through. Even if you're in a movie that's not so successful, like Crazy/Beautiful helped me a lot within the industry. People really respected it and girls really loved the film. That's what really matters is people coming up to me and saying 'that movie really meant a lot to me'". Even early on this weekend morning, we felt that, no way, could this young woman be anything but beautiful. We learned that she feels differently. Is she worried about her looks? "Of course. Every girl and young guy is. You get sick of your face looking in the mirror every day especially like this when I'm doing press and all the hair and make-up. It gets to be too much sometimes. Sometimes you want to look like crap and I just want to have my zit cream on for you guys! Share what the true 19-year-old Kirsten Dunst is really like". Hey, we can relate. While drinking diet Coke to stay alert, Kirsten admitted that she's been working pretty hard lately. "I was challenged emotionally with the Marion Davies (role) and challenged physically in (Spiderman). This is wild, this much press and tours and all this craziness and if you're not getting enough good sleep and if you're sick, it just drains you". What were those physical challenges? Working with blue screen and special effects wasn't new to her (Jumanji and Small Soldiers) but there was more physical action than usual in this superhero flick. "I'd worked with blue and green screen stuff before. I'd had a little bit of that 'acting to nothing' experience so I knew what I was getting into. I could handle it but he day before I started doing all the falls and drops they gave me like an hour of training. It was jump right into it which was a good thing because you don't build up this thing in your head where it becomes more of a big deal". It wasn't just Tobey and the stunt "Spideys" in danger and discomfort. "There was this one shot where I'm dropping and miraculously I grab onto the pole of the tram and that was really scary. I was high up and I'd be looking down on this tram and I had to just go into it, grab the thing and slap against the tram and I had blood on my hands. My hands are hurting badly and then the harnesses were uncomfortable to be in also. The thing that I was most bummed out about was the rain stuff. That was miserable, those two days. I was freezing my (fanny) off, so cold". Mary Jane was one role that Kirsten could really make her own. She told us exactly what makes this hot redhead tick. "I wanted to create a superhero in her. In the beginning, she doesn't accept herself and she puts up a mask and pretends she's happy when she's having a hard home life. The only person she's really vulnerable to is Peter Parker and I think he brings out that in her. She dates a lot of guys who aren't good for her and I'm kind of disappointed in Mary Jane for that but she learns her lessons and at the end you know that she's going to be on the right track in becoming a woman and being secure in who she is." But can Kirsten relate? "Yeah. It's like being in high school. But I was very open with my friends. If I was upset, they knew it and I really didn't have a hard home life like Mary Jane but I can relate to the part about growing up and becoming a woman and making bad decisions in boyfriends and having learning experiences". Mary Jane isn't always the most sympathetic character in the film. "I was kind of bummed after I saw the movie because I was wondering if people would think 'oh she's such a bitch because she obviously knows that Peter had some feelings for her and she can't be totally oblivious and she's dating his best friend'. It's a little fishy and not very nice. I wouldn't do something like that but Mary Jane has a lot to learn. She didn't have good role models growing up". We had to ask about all those romance rumors. Were "Spidey" and Mary Jane really a couple? What about that chemistry with Tobey? "That's why I was hired for the part because it just clicked. When we did the scenes together, it flowed nicely I think and there was a magic there where everybody in the room almost disappeared and it was just he and I. I think you're very lucky when you get to be with an actor and be in that situation where it just clicks and you don't have to work hard at it. I think that's what Tobey and I had. I know there are rumors about us dating but no, we're just friends". She coped okay with the rumors. "It's hype about the movie so I just looked at it in that way. I know in myself what's true so whatever..it's okay. Most of that was in rag-mags". Romance
or no, there is one really unusual and hot kiss in the rain that flustered
both stars. But it must have been cool to act with a superhero mystery man behind a mask. "That's the mystery. That's why Mary Jane is so intrigued by him. He has a good voice so I guess that counts. I always said to Sam (Raimi) 'How does she know he's not some 40-year-old dad? You lift up the mask and okay, I guess not' and put it back down again. I guess that's the movie magic". One more
kissing question. Was it weirder kissing Tobey with a mask on or Edward
Herman as William Randolph Hearst in The Cat's Meow? "Oh, I would
rather kiss Tobey any day. Ed has a daughter my age so it's really creepy.
I was like 'okay pretend you're kissing your dad goodbye'. Every time
I watch those scenes with me and Ed Herman, it grossed me out a little
bit. Eww, he's so much older than me. He's my dad. It's weird. I didn't
tell him that on the set". Kirsten has had great success in smaller films. Why take on an icon? "I thought Spiderman had always been the most grounded and humanistic character of all the superheroes. The one you could relate to the most. And Tobey playing Spiderman is such a great choice because it's different. He hasn't really been in a huge film and I think it's good risk that the studio took because he's a really good actor and Sam Raimi directing, I knew it would be a quality big movie". Kirsten is ready for the fame that the film could generate but confided that she has no desire to reach cult status. "I'm very happy that it's not my face all over the billboards like Tobey and Willem (Dafoe). I'm happy that it's the masked superhero. That's what the movie is about. I won't be on any cans of soda. There is a Mary Jane action figure but I feel distance because she has red hair. I don't really feel like she's me. It doesn't creep me out. If she was totally blonde, I don't know". The film's director Sam Raimi has a rep for being passionate about his characters. Kirsten agrees. "Sam really inspires you because he's so passionate about Spiderman. I've never seen anybody talk so eloquently and have such a heartfelt love and respect and wanting kids to get good morals out of the story. He has sons himself. He just sparkles when he talks about Spiderman. He's like a little boy." Despite the love fest, there was a little good-natured ribbing on the set. "Sam's wonderful and I just love him but he has an odd sense of humor. He'd always make fun of me but I think that's his way of dealing with girls. He'd tease me a lot and call me 'girly girl' and everybody on the set would start calling me that. One day I snapped back with 'I have a name and it's Kirsten'. I deserve some respect. Girls are easily called names if they show strength. Laura Ziskin(the producer) was really a good role model for me on set. If Tobey bitches and complains nobody calls him a little whiney (witch). Girls have to act all sweet but we're really working the whole set". There are two Spiderman sequels already in development. Kirsten gave us her honest reason for participating ."I've signed for the sequel and the one after that. It's kind of good because you can do little Indie films and know that a big payday is coming (laughs). I don't need to worry about my living circumstance because I'm doing Spiderman next year so I'll take that little movie for no money sure". Kirsten gave us her take on the ending and her character's evolution. "At the end I think Tobey's pretty manly and I'm pretty womanly so you know in the next one we'll be going into adulthood. Some girls don't think they'll like Spiderman but little do they know it's a chick flick in a way. It's like a soap opera. (Peter Parker) is like 'It's my curse. It's my power. It's my curse. I'm Spiderman, baby' or whatever he says. It's another life lesson for Mary Jane and will only make her a better woman. You can't always get what you want. We'll see in the sequel". Will Mary Jane and Peter be a couple again? "I think, in the sequel, I'm going to have this really great boyfriend, talented, smart, sweet, on the good track. Nothing's wrong with him. Peter Parker's like 'there's nothing wrong with this guy and I'm gonna lose her'. I think we're gonna have some good love dynamics. A showdown." Mary Jane won't be a supermodel, however. "We're going to make her just an actress. I'm not tall enough to be a supermodel anyway". Besides the currently playing Cat's Meow, the popular actress has a lot on her acting plate. "I did Levity, that Billy Bob Thornton movie so that should balance out Spiderman. I don't know if I should go for serious or comedy. There's a small, dramatic film, then another that's a comedy and fun and a bigger movie. It's hard to pick sometimes". Whatever Kirsten selects, we know she'll give it her all and we'll be there. |
