HANGIN' WITH.... Lance
and Emmanuelle Put it all "On the Line" N'Sync fans have
been rabidly waiting for the group's first feature film. There was talk
of the guys making Grease 3 or a Beatles-style Hard Day's Night
clone. Instead, Lance Bass and Joey Fatone make feature film debuts in
On the Line, a romantic comedy set in Chicago and filmed there
and in Toronto. Lance plays an unlucky-in-love ad exec who falls for gorgeous
Canadian actress Emmanuelle Chriqui when he meets her on the train. He
spends most of the movie looking for her with the help of Joey, playing
a heavy metal-style rock musician/song writer down on his luck. We caught a few minutes recently at an L.A. hotel with Lance and Emmanuelle who, though involved with others, make a cute couple. Spikey-haired Lance really does have those pale greenish eyes and was decked out in wild multi-colored shirt and silver cross. His dark-haired leading lady Emmanuelle looked like a slightly younger Catherine Zeta Jones in a cuddly-soft sweater, jeans and hoop earrings. The young stars spoke of everything from their reactions to the Sept. 11th terror attacks to going for the MTV "Best Kiss" award and getting mobbed by fans. AGW: Lance, what happened to N'Sync doing Grease 3? Lance: We were writing the screenplay for Grease 3. We were supposed to play the T-Birds. No one wanted to deal with Grease right now. Britney was attached to do the female lead but they didn't want to touch it. I thought it was huge. I think it will definitely come back up. JC was the main guy but all of us had a cool part. So many different people own different parts (of that film/play). One owns the play, one owns the name, one owns the T-birds and nobody wanted to deal with it. There was just so much legality that it was just crazy. AGW: You had some trouble in Chicago? Lance: I love Chicago.
The people who were working with the company don't AGW: How did you decide on this project? Lance: I wasn't attached to it at all but for our first film (at Happy Place, Lance's production company) we wanted a good, quality movie for everybody. This was perfect. It was an R-rated script but we wanted to bring it up to PG-13. We wanted to utilize famous athletes and musicians in the movie. But I had time off and I could play the Kevin character. It was given to us by some friends at Tapestry films. It was a short film called "On the 'L". Joey and I have always wanted to do a movie together. For six years we've been writing little screenplays and stuff. I called him saying 'We've got the time, let's do it. You're playing this character Rod. You can't say no'. AGW: You have the rest of N'Sync, Chris and Justin at the end in a cameo. Where was J.C.? Lance: J.C. was there, going to be a bartender but the scene got cut. We didn't have time to shoot it. I'm kinda glad because I didn't want anybody else (N'Sync members) in the movie because it would just confuse people and make it look cheesy. But having them in the end credits was perfect and funny. That's us. That's our humor right there. AGW: Justin is wearing a really weird hat. Did he pick it? Lance: Yeah. We had some stylists but he definitely went for that hat. AGW: Both of you, if you had been in the situation in the film, where you meet someone briefly, would you have gotten the person's number? Lance: (Grinning) I would have gotten the number. Emmanuelle: Yeah. It was tricky because had he asked for the number, I would have given it to him. I wouldn't have asked for his number because I was still in a relationship. As far as the character goes, I think she was hoping that he would have asked her but he choked. I personally would, maybe just to be friends. If things were on the rocks and I met this boy, yeah, I would give him my number but make it clear. AGW: When you were younger, did you have the same problem asking out girls as your character Kevin did? Lance: Not quite where I choke like Kevin does. I'm one of those people that just didn't realize that the girl was interested. I was always the friend, the brother, you know. Eventually, I'd become friends and we'd realize there was something there. AGW: Lance, you don't currently have a high profile girlfriend. Lance: No, I'm over that stuff. There is just no way. It doesn't work. It's not too competitive - you just never see them. My last relationship was an actress and it just doesn't work. And it just doesn't feel real. It was Danielle Fischell. It lasted for two years and it was pretty good but the two years (together) was probably less than four months. Actually, I'm not single anymore as of last week. Just dating. It's a really good friend of mine, Laura. She is a nurse. She started out as an actress but she just never went for it. I'm trying to get her into that because she is so good but she doesn't realize it. AGW: Was acting always in your plan?
Teenhollywood.com: Emmanuelle, you've done film work in Canada so you had more time as an actress than the guys (Joey and Lance). Did you give them some tips? Emmanuelle: No. When we were on set, Lance and I and the director, we just really worked well together. We would rehearse and it was important to us that Lance and I would talk after every scene. Like 'Oh, that felt good, right?' or 'Let's try it this way'. Always just keeping it real so that it felt real. AGW: Lance, what kinds of characters would you like to play next? Lance: The next one, I don't want a depressing character like this. He's a little too down for me. I'd either want to do something comedy or action. I'm leaning towards more action. I'm taking Tae Bo. AGW: What's the most romantic thing anyone's ever done for you? Lance: Cook dinner maybe. I'm usually the one being romantic. I like giving flowers. I love cooking. I've cooked and I've taken my girlfriend out to a picnic, horseback riding. Emmanuelle: I did a romantic thing for Lance. There were a lot of first times on this movie. It was Lance's first movie. It was A Happy Place's first film and it was my first leading lady role. I got him a silver picture frame. His assistant Beth took this amazing picture of us. We were both in costume and there was the Chicago skyline behind us and this panavision camera in the corner. A perfect picture so I put it in the frame and then on the bottom it says "Look Up .XOXO, Abbey. It was romantic from Abbey. Note: Abbey is her character in the film and "Look Up refers to the scene where they finally connect. Lance: That's the only picture up in my house right now. Everyone: 'Awwwwwww'. AGW: What was the most difficult scene to film? Emmanuelle: The most nerve wracking was the 'naming the Presidents' scene. Lance: You had to name way more than me. Emmanuelle: And we didn't ever screw it up. We were stressing the night before. Maybe we can get cue cards. Lance: I have the worst memory in the world. AGW: If all this were to end tomorrow, could you handle it and move on? Lance: Wow. It would be very depressing. This is my life. I love entertaining. I could never see myself doing anything else. Emmanuelle: Yeah. I love other things but this is my passion. AGW: Both of you, what was the best and worst advice you have gotten? Lance: The best advice I've gotten in this business is to really know when to relax. When to say 'when'. Because people are always gonna be in your face saying 'do this'. I've learned how to say 'no'. I never used to say no, just yes, yes, yes. The worst advice, 'sign this contract and I'll be your business manager. It's normal to take 90 percent of everything'. Emmanuelle: Best advice has been stay true to yourself always and that just means for every situation that comes your way, really, really take a look at it. Is everything okay at heart? If it isn't, chances are that it's not gonna work out. AGW: What would you say to teens who are terrified about the world situation today and did you lose anyone you know in the attack? Lance: Yeah. I've lost people. It's difficult days right now. It's sad to say that it took something like this to being everyone together because I think the world is as close as it's ever been right now and it's a beautiful thing. I think as entertainers, it's up to us to shine a little happiness, as much as we can and that's why I love this movie coming out at the time it is because it makes you escape for an hour and a half and makes you feel good and same thing with music. We're continuing with our music and concerts and basically, what I would say is talk about it. Get to know what's going on and go on with life. Like President Bush said, it's important that we continue to go on, to watch out for ourselves but, as a closer unit we'll go on and make a better future. Emmanuelle: Absolutely. I think it's also important to educate ourselves. To take this as an eye-opening experience. We can't live like this any more. America, our generation especially, has just been so innocent all this time. Now that this has been shown to us, we have a responsibility to educate ourselves and be aware of the things that are going on. Yes, move on with our lives but not forget it, not pretend it's not happening, deal with it. Entertainers have a major responsibility I think. If you look back in history, the arts is what carried a nation through. And hopefully, that is what could change the face of film for less violence in film, less brutal things to watch and more from the heart. That's got to be the message right now. AGW: Okay you two, what about that final kiss scene? Lance: I'll admit, we were going for MTV "Best Kiss". We've got it in the bag. No, it was cool. It's strange with a bunch of people cheering and screaming at you when you're doing it. 'Turn your head this way'. When you're kissing, it was unnatural because, 'okay, I can't move my face'. But you're also in your character so the passion is coming out. We got to hang out in Toronto for a month and become really good friends so there's definitely chemistry there when you see us. You know, bam, they're totally into each other. Emmanuelle: In the circumstance it really fed the scene. I was standing up on the bridge and could see Lance running as Kevin, running up with 'Oh my God she showed up' and the paparazzi and fans and people hollering and you are in that moment. The weirdest part was, in my experience, when you make a movie, the kissing scene is like the first or second day. You don't know the person. It's just technical. But Lance and I hung out, became such good friends. It was 'oh, we've gotta kiss now'. We were laughing through half of it. AGW: How many takes on that scene? Lance: (laughs) There were a lot of angles. That stuff on your lips was sticky. Emmanuelle: A lot of Binaca and a lot of chapstick. AGW: On the next N'Sync album will you or Joey write some stuff and what about touring? Lance: I write. I wrote three songs for the last album that I didn't submit because I was embarrassed to submit them. I'm not a good (song) writer. We (Joey and Lance) love writing the treatments for the videos and movies. We're good at that. The other guys are great. I don't see how people write music. It's so hard. We just put our harmonies on and there we are. And we tour. This gives us another creative outlet, this acting. It really challenges us like writing (songs) for the other guys, challenges them. April is definitely going around the world. We are going to Australia, Asia and Europe. Nothing right now. We are off until April. Hopefully, by then it will be calm. You never know what is going to happen over the next couple of months. Hopefully we won't be at war. It will be about a four month tour. AGW:
What advice would you have for a teen trying to get into the music industry?
Lance: It was a
dream of mine and you just believed in it so much that it eventually took
baby steps to where it came true. Finding the right manager, the right
opportunities, always going on different auditions. Just trying everything
you can to learn because you go on these little bitty things that make
no sense at the time but it really develops your character. You look two
years back and it's Wow! |
