We're Hangin' With.....

"Freaky Friday's"

Lindsay Lohan

by: Lynn B.

If you remember Lindsay as a cute young pair of red-haired twins in the remake of Disney's The Parent Trap a few years ago, (check pic at right) then retune your memory screen because she's all grown up (check pic below!). As a 3-year-old, Lindsay was the first red-haired kid to be signed as a model by the prestigious Ford Modeling Agency. She went on to star in soaps and do countless commercials before launching a film career and popping up on the cover of Vanity Fair in last month's "It's Totally Raining Teens" feature story. Lindsay also sings and her first pop single "Ultimate" is on the soundtrack of her new mom/daughter switch film with Jamie Lee Curtis, Freaky Friday.

When we sat down at the 4 Seasons Hotel in L.A. to chat with her, Lindsay, in white tee and tan parachute pants, was all bubbly and excited. The petite actress's long red hair is now more strawberry blonde and her freckles are limited to her shoulders. She let us know that her spectacular turquoise bracelet was borrowed. We got the scoop on how she worked to "become" Jamie Lee as her mom in the new film, her family, about her music, almost co-starring with Kelly Osbourne and all about her dating preferences.

AGW: Why has it been so long since you've done a feature film?

Lindsay: When I did Parent Trap, I was ten. I was thrown off by the whole fame thing. It came all at once. Parent Trap was an amazing movie. How do you follow that up? And I wanted to go back to school and be a normal kid. I went to high school, did two Disney channel things, which were fun just to keep up. And then Freaky Friday came along. It was just like "wow, this is a great script" and it would be perfect for me to come back with this.

AGW: Was it weird because it was again a dual-character kind of thing?

Lindsay: It was, and it was also a re-make. People were like, "Oh she's going to do all the re-makes now." If you do it the right way, then there's nothing wrong with that. But it's fun because it's a challenge. When you play certain characters, people my age have a tendency to be typecast and they are their characters. So it's great to find a film where I can play something that's completely different from everyone my age.

AGW: You come from a family with three other kids. So is it hard, to get one on one time with you mom, like you and Jamie had?

Lindsay: It is. It's not as bad as everyone would expect. I have great siblings and they are crazy and they do need everyone's attention in the family. But my mom and I are very close. I think that's really important. I've been really lucky to have such great parents. I confide in my mom a lot. Which I think is something I need to do at my age.

AGW: Are you using your own mom as an example when you turn into the mom in this film.

Lindsay: A little bit but Jamie's character in the movie is very square. My mom's not very square. I have rules in my house, but my mom is more like me. My mom's like Jamie in real life. Which I think is great. I think that's why my mom and I get along so well.

AGW: You're the oldest in your family. Do any of the other kids act?

Lindsay: My little brother and sister want to act. My brother Michael's not into that at all. He plays sports and gets straight A's. I admire him so much. My little sister Ally just wants to do whatever I do. But my little brother said the funniest thing the other day. I was talking about going to the premiere and how I wish I had a date, and he was like 'you don't need a date, I'm going with you, I have a suit. You can take your picture with me. Or you can go with Orlando Bloom because he's Legolas'. And I was like 'no he's too old for me and he has a girlfriend'. He goes, 'well I'm going to do a movie with him and I'll talk to him and then you can go with him'. It was the cutest thing I've ever heard.

AGW: What advice would you give them?

Lindsay: I would tell my sister to be confident with herself, and go with her instincts and do what she really feels is right, rather than listening to everyone else. It's important to surround yourself with good people that have grown and experienced more. But it's also important to do what you feel is right, because if you don't then you're not going to be happen and then what's the point in doing it?

AGW: Did you study Jamie at all, like her mannerisms or anything?

Lindsay: I think it was more like Jamie studied me. Jamie's very different than her character. But I also took things from basic adults. Adults speak slower, they have better posture. Well the character at least, she's a psychiatrist. That's kind of what I did. It's difficult to find little things, but I found them here and there.

AGW: You watched video of Jamie?

Lindsay: We sat in a room, Jamie and I, and she read the whole script just as herself. It was really great, to watch it back. It was mostly finding each other and having fun with it. And the wardrobe helps a lot. When you see a mother in fishnets and a mini-schoolgirl outfit and a guitar, it's going to help [you believe that a teen girl is inside].

AGW: What did you and Jamie do in terms of hanging out?

Lindsay: We'd hang out on the set a lot. I didn't have much down-time cause I was doing schooling also. We would just talk about boys, that stuff, music. She has a daughter my age, so she came to the set a few times. Whenever we could, we'd just hang out. She was more like a friend to me than a motherly person on the set. We got along really well.

AGW: Did you get the impression that she hasn't really grown up yet?

Lindsay: She has her motherly instinct and stuff like that. But she's fun. And she just has something about her that she's so easy to get along with, and she's so down to earth, so lovable. It's really easy to be comfortable about her.

AGW: Did you go watch the original Freaky Friday starring a young Jodi Foster in your role?

Lindsay: I couldn't really because this is very different from the original. It's the same structure, the mother and daughter switching places, but it's like my character is punk-rock. Which is kind of tom-boyish but it has more of an edge. Also, it's Jodi Foster, I don't want to try and be like Jodi Foster and do a terrible job and be completely embarrassed.

AGW: You are in a band in the film. Are you interested in a musical career?

Lindsay: I am interested in that. I've been singing and dancing since I was little. It's hard right now because there are a lot of other girls coming out. There's this girl Kiley Dean, and Hilary [Duff], and Britney's new album. It's kind of like I don't want to just be one in the pack. I want to separate myself. I think who's doing a great job of that right now is Liz Phair. I just got her album and it's awesome. She's really cool. She doesn't have to be all in your face to let her music come out and kind of do her own thing. I think that's what intrigues people. But I think it's great that my singing is coming out in this movie, to show people that I can sing.

AGW: Did you play the guitar too?

Lindsay: I'm not going to say 'play guitar', but I learned for the movie. I learned all the chords. It's not me on the soundtrack playing, because we didn't have time to do that. But I want to keep up on it. When I have time I'm going to take lessons and stuff.

AGW: We know that earlier, there were some changes in casting. Did you have any chance to work with Kelly Osbourne, or Gwen Stefani who were considered for roles?

Lindsay: No I didn't. I got Kelly's song "Shut Up", which was originally going to be in the film. I started learning to play it on the guitar, and I was really good at it. I was really proud of myself. 'Wow I can play this song'. And it just didn't work out. Kristina Vidal [who got the part] is awesome. We all got along really well. We were like a real band, which was cool. It would've been cool is Kelly could have done it, but things happen.

AGW: What would be your ideal date evening?

Lindsay: I'm not really a big dating person. Dinner and a movie because then you get to know each other but it's not too intimate. It's fun, you can see a movie, get to know what the other person is like, and what kind of stuff they like. Nice and fun.

AGW: Has a guy ever stood outside your window like the guy in this movie?

Lindsay: I wish! It's kind of hard. I'm at the age right now where I really want a boyfriend. All my friends have boyfriends. And then you look at all these 24 year old guys in the business, that are these gorgeous actors, Orlando Bloom, Aston Kutcher. They're all taken! And they're all too old for me.

AGW: Has your mom warned you about the guys not to date?

Lindsay: No, because I'm sure my mom when she was young liked the older boys. It's just instinct. When you're in high school and there's the seniors it's like, "oh they're a senior." But I'm the type of person, if I like someone, I'll go the complete opposite way. I'll kind of be rude to them unintentionally. I won't give them the time of day. I've learned that it makes them more interested.

AGW: Playing hard to get.

Lindsay: Yeah but when the guys start playing hard to get I'm like, "what's going on?" I'm not a big person on playing games. If you like someone, tell them. If you want to call someone, and you hang up the phone with them, don't wait for them to call you back, call them back again if you want to talk to them.

AGW: What about dating other actors? Some actors will only date other actors because they say they understand them better.

Lindsay: I don't think you should really say, "I'm only going to date actors." I don't think that's fair. But I think people are right. It's easier for me right now to date another actor because if I'm traveling and I'm on sets, and I do have to kiss another guy in a scene, it's like they'll understand it because they might have to do the same thing. Other guys might get jealous. It depends on who the person is. I think the coolest thing is to date a rock star. That's what all girls my age want right now. My biggest crush, and I'm going to say it so that he knows, is Robert Carmine from Rooney. So that's what girls my age want right now.

AGW: What are some actors or actresses that you'd like to work with now that you're starting your career?

Lindsay: I've always loved Johnny Depp, but after seeing Pirates of the Caribbean twice, and I haven't seen a movie twice in a while, I'd love to work with him. I'd love to work with Jodi Foster, Julia Roberts, I'd love to work with Kate Hudson. I just love her, I think she's so cute. She just has this thing about her, you can't stop watching her. When I saw her in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days she's just so fun. She's just like her mom. There's so many people I could go on forever.

AGW: Do you have something in your life that works as an anti-drug for you?

Lindsay: Just hanging out with my friends. I think it's important to be yourself, and if you're comfortable with who you are, there's no need to go near drugs. It's out there right now. At 17 you hear about it a lot. But what's the point? It's ridiculous, when you look at yourself when you're doing that, it's really unattractive. I've never needed anything like that, I can just have fun if I'm with people I'm comfortable around. Just surround yourself with the right people, and you won't need any of that.

AGW: Are you better able to deal with the fame now than before?

Lindsay: Yeah I think I've matured in a lot of ways, which happens when you go from 11 to 17. You have more respect for everything. It's like on the set sometimes, you get really stressed out, trying to do schooling and working nights. But you get to a point where you're like, "I'm making a movie." People would die to do this. You really have to take a minute and just sit, "I'm in a trailer on a movie set, how many times have I wished to do this?" I don't even think of it as fame, it's like I'm doing my job and I'm getting recognized for it. But I think I shouldn't be getting recognized as much as a heart surgeon should. You know what I mean?

AGW: So you're 17 now, are you driving?

Lindsay: I am driving… scary thought. Yeah, I've been practicing driving since I was 14, in my yard on a tractor. My brothers have dirt bikes and quads, but that's not really driving. We had a lot of property, we had 4 acres. I would take my dad's car onto the grass in the backyard. But that's not like being on the road. I love driving. I think it's fun to drive and I did get my first car, and it's a fast car. I got a BMW convertible. My mom was never going to let me get a sports car, and I got a sports car. I deserve it. I'm a good kid.

AGW: Have you thought about going to college?

Lindsay: I do think it's important to go to college. I think it's important to have an education. I was really interested in going to college and studying law, but I don't know how that would work out, because I do really want to focus on my career, and I'm just acting and singing. I didn't take my SAT's this year, I'm waiting for next year because I didn't have any time to prepare. So we'll see how it ends up, but I'm definitely going to college in the future, in the near future.

AGW: What is something else you'd be doing if not acting?

Lindsay: I love singing and dancing, and I love writing songs. It's really easy for me to sit down and once I learn to play guitar, it's only gong to benefit me in terms of writing. That's something that I'm good at. Ever since I was little I've loved designing clothes and stuff. It depends, I'm good at arguing and getting my point across, winning a fight. When there's 4 kids in the house running around you really have to speak loud to get your point across.

AGW: What are you doing right now?

Lindsay: I'm working on a movie in Toronto called Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. It's so much fun.

AGW: Do you sing in that movie too?

Lindsay: I do sing in it, but it's different singing. The singing in [Queen] is more pop/hip-hop. And there's dancing in it. My character's really out there. She's really eccentric. I think Freaky Friday and Confessions for Disney are such great vehicles to gear towards people my age also. My friends are watching the Disney channel. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Freaky Friday really show that 15 and 16 year olds do a lot of stuff. They want to dress hot sometimes. It's good to be your age for as long as you can. But it's important to show how teens really are.

AGW: Do you want to be more like Jennifer Love Hewitt who acts and sings on the side? Or more like Britney Spears who sings and acts on the side?

Lindsay: I think both of them are really talented. I don't really want to compare myself to anyone cause then I'll always be judging myself based on them. I need to strategize and see how I'm going to come out with my singing after acting. I'm going to do acting cause that's where I'm based. And if singing gets bigger for a little bit, I'll switch on and off.

AGW: What's in your cd player right now?

Lindsay: Rooney and Liz Phair. And Mya's new cd, her cd is awesome.
