8/12/02 We're Hangin' With........That Blue Crush surfer hunk...... MATTHEW DAVIS By: Lynn B.
AGW: When they first tried to teach you to surf, were you freaked out? Matt: That's about right. They took me up to a beach and said all the little kids on the North Shore (of the island of Oahu) learn to surf here. They throw me out there and I couldn't stay on the board and these huge waves are crashing down on me and I got knocked off. When you get knocked off and you're inside the wave, you're getting spun around, they didn't tell me to relax. If you try to fight through it you lose all your energy and all your air. I'm fighting through this wave and got hit by another one. I was panicking and the guy I was with started laughing and grabbed me up and paddled me over to my board. AGW: Did you want to quit the film at that point? Matt: I had thoughts of 'what have I gotten myself into?' I'm terrified of the ocean. I'm terrified of sharks. What am I doing? But you know it's also a challenge you've got to conquer so I had to look at it that way. AGW: Leading lady Kate Bosworth says that guys are more shy than girls in the romantic scenes. Matt: I'm not shy or uptight about that. At this point Kate is passing by us. She overhears, walks up and they talk about their love scenes. She teases him. Who was really into it? Neither star would admit that they were doing anything but acting. Kate is whisked away for another interview. AGW: If you have a girlfriend, how does she feel about you doing those scenes? Matt: She was pretty understanding. It's never something that you're totally at ease with but, at the same time, you can't just do a scene and have someone say, okay, we're breaking up. But, I'm no longer together with her. Nothing to do with the movie. AGW: Is there a particular role that you are dying to play? Matt: There's nothing specifically that I want to do, not a character that I want to be stereotyped with. I do want to look back and feel confident that I did challenge myself to do different characters. But it's hard sometimes. You get people that want you to do only commercially viable films for the sake of getting more well known to encourage the Hollywood machine to take a risk on you in their next movie. You have to strike a balance between what you really want to do versus commercial movies. AGW: Do you try to strategize your career..plan every move? Matt: I would like to say no but I'm sure I am. I read an article where Sean Penn said he's not a 'careerist' and that may be true. He's an actor I admire. I love being an actor so I want to be able to play the game and play it well and make smart choices without compromising. AGW: Are you a planner or a take it as it comes person? Matt: I let things take their course. Every time I try to plan something it never works out that way. It's always a lesson in letting go. AGW: You've done a lot of theater work. What do you love about films? Matt: Acting in films is very hard. I think more difficult than doing a play in that it's such a collaborative effort and what you have in mind to create might not even make it in the movie. Your performance is at the mercy of editors and sound mixers. In my case I've made three movies in the last year and a half, none of which have opened yet so it's weird. You have no sense of feedback. But in a play you have that immediate feedback from an audience. That can be much more satisfying. AGW: Is that a tattoo? Matt: It's a snake. I had a tattoo under it that I got when I was out of it with an ex girlfriend of mine and I thought I could either get it removed or cover it up. It was an "om" symbol. This one is new. I might get the old ones taken off. I got them when I was stupid. AGW: In this movie you are kind of a "player" with girls. Matt: After watching it, I realized I am kind of a player. I thought I was so overbearing. 'Come up to my room'. That wasn't my intention at all when we were filming it. That's what I was talking about. You do five different takes of a scene and they can assemble it in a way that's different than what you had in mind.
Matt: Yeah I think I have a healthy dose of romance in me. It's weird, if I've met a girl that I'm really in love with I'll go all out just to show my feelings for somebody but if I'm just dating, I wouldn't say I'm a very romantic person. I love women who are very passionate, secure and driven by what they feel is important to them. AGW: Is it hard to date an actress? Matt: They are working too. Actors, in general are insecure people and when you're away, you're dealing with a girl who is working as well. You're kind of in a no-win situation. AGW: So what did you buy with your first big acting paycheck? Matt: I think a car. I think after Pearl Harbor I had a decent amount of money to buy a new car. AGW: What is your natural high in life? Matt: I have two dogs that I love. When we go to the dog park and I'm running around playing with them, getting in the mud, I have the best time with the dogs. Lillie and Mo, they are brother and sister pit bull puppies that I got out of the pound about a year and a half ago. I haven't been in a location where I could take them with me yet. AGW: What kind of music are you into? Matt: I have a lot of jazz, classic stuff. AGW: So what's out next for you after Blue Crush? Matt: I have this movie called Below that's about a World War II submarine, a haunted sub. The whole idea is that it can't surface to take on new air because it's being chased by this destroyer. All of these things are happening and you don't know if it's a mental thing or real. It's a murder mystery, very unique. I play a young lieutenant who gets to solve the mystery.
