WE'RE HANGIN' WITH...Max Keeble and Friends:
We found all the young actors to be very smart, friendly and stylin'; sharp pants and shirts for the guys and Zena in a black tee with silver lightning bolt and really cool jeans that her mom had appliqued with musical notes. The co-stars talked about their film, how they feel about current world events, future plans and being bullied. AGW: The cafeteria food fight in this film looks way fun. Was it? Alex: They said 'go' and then we threw and they'd say stop and we would most of the time. Sometimes, we'd just keep going. That was fun. Zena: There was one scene where we were supposed to be doing specific things but I wasn't really doing that. Someone had to hit me in the face with a potato. Josh: I was just going crazy. I was just having fun like in a regular food fight at my school. It was cool. AGW: Alex, was this movie more physically demanding for you than starring in the Home Alone sequel? Alex: Yeah. In Home Alone 3 I was a lot younger and in every shot and it was a lot colder. It was more like being able to stand for a long time. This one is different. I'm doing back flips and riding ostriches. (The ostrich) was named Jughead and it was skittish and mean but it was cool. AGW: Alex, did they let you do your stuntwork? Alex:
I did a good amount of it. The biking sequences in the beginning, going
down steps and over the ramp, I didn't do that stuff but I did a lot of
the biking where you see me throwing the papers. Kelley, my stunt double
did a lot of the advanced biking shots. AGW: If you rent a movie, what would it be? Alex: It depends. If I went out right now, I would probably get Mall Rats. I've seen Dogma and I want to see Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back because those guys are hilarious. AGW: What does the "D" in your name stand for? Alex:
David which is my mom's brother's first name. Alex is my grandfather's
middle name. Alex D. Linz is this short kinda cool sounding name. AGW: The theme of your film is that revenge isn't always the way to go. How do you feel about what is going on in the world now? Alex: I think we need to have controlled retaliation. We should only strike when we really know what's going on. Not carpet bomb Afghanistan. We should take out strategic sites like weapons manufacturing, bridges and stuff like that. I'd like to see us find Osama Bin Laden. But if we did capture or kill him, how much good would that do? There's still thousands of people behind him. That's why you can't just attack one group. Zena: I wish we could talk it out and do something that would make it all go away or be better. Talk rather than do something we'd all regret. Living in New York is so amazing. People are all working together. I've never seen people no nice in New York. They used to be yelling, cursing and beeping at one another. Now they're nice. I live in Brooklyn. People are nice here. I love it here (in L.A.). Josh: Yeah, before, people in Manhattan were like aiming at you in their cars. It's opened up our eyes. The United States isn't immune to being attacked. It isn't just a little place in the world where it can happen. Peace is an awesome thing. I hope we're able to keep that and that the people who did this are reprimanded that we're able to lead a regular, everyday life. AGW: Alex, do you want to direct films when you are older? Alex: Maybe. I want to do a little bit of everything. I want to be an adventurer, do cool stuff, go around the world and that's not really a job so I was thinking that a job that you can adventure in and take pictures and write is photo journalism. I'm a pretty good amateur photographer and I can write so I was thinking I want to climb Mr. Fuji and go to the Buddhist monastery on top and take pictures and explore. But, maybe I could direct an independent short or artsy thing. AGW: Josh, you interviewed people for Nick as a news correspondent. Would you want to do that? Josh: It was great fun being able to go to the Republican and Democratic conventions. I got to meet some amazing people. I interviewed Bob Dole and Rob Reiner but it's really difficult. I feel bad for George Stephanopolus and all those political reporters. It's a hard job. People didn't want to talk to me. Zena: I want to get an Academy Award and I want to work with some big famous actors. I want to be in a thriller like a really scary movie. AGW:
Josh, where do you see yourself in a few years? Josh: Living with Jennifer Love Hewitt! AGW: What's coming up for you guys! Alex: Right now I have a recurring role on "Providence" on t.v. And just doing 7th Grade. You know it's difficult. Josh: I'm in Spun (with Mena Suvari). (Note: This film is not for kids or young teens!) I'm like a Crystal Meth addict. It was very different. It's a new kind of genre for me. John Leguzamo and Brittany Murphy are in it. It was fun because I got the comedy from John who helped me with it. It's important to balance out your comedic and dramatic work. I was able to look up about it on the internet, what the after effects are and what happens to you when you are on it. Usually people are happy to explain to me about what happens. AGW: Do you like the internet? Zena:
I love the internet. My friends always tell me about these sites. I like
muffinfilms.com. It's the coolest site in the world. It's like 10 films
about muffins! Josh: Uh, I'm a big fan of joshpeck.com, coming to a website soon. I like 'um all. E-bay and Amazon.com bidding on different things. I'm into playstation. I just got Grand Tourismo Three which is awesome and I'm dying to get Twisted Metal Black and all those. I'm excited about getting X-Box. That looks really amazing. It's gonna revolutionize everything. Zena: I'm not allowed to play video games. I watch too much t.v. I go over to my friends' house and we play playstation. I go online. I'm only allowed to watch t.v. on the weekends. But my parents are cool. AGW: Are you in a regular classroom now? Alex: This week I only went to school two days because I shot "Providence" and Thursday was (the Jewish holiday) Yom Kippur. It was a short week but I still have to do all my (home) work. Josh: I just started homeschool which is kinda new and interesting. Tried to have a food fight at homeschool .didn't work. My mom got really upset and took my playstation away. Zena: I go to regular private school and it's really cool to get away from acting for a few hours and be with your friends and stuff. I love school. AGW: Do you get treated differently at school because you are an actor? Alex: Yeah, and it's not all positive but you put up with it. Zena: They treat me differently because I'm an actress but you learn who your real friends are. Josh: They just treat me differently because I'm weird. You kind of get that but it builds character when kids are kind of mean because you learn that not everybody is gonna like you and you deal with it. You get the great acting (chances) and there are things you have to give up. But, it works out. AGW: Have you ever been bullied and what did you do about it? Alex: In 6th grade, there are the 'scrubs". They're just called the 'scrubs". I'm one of those vertically-challenged people so even though I'm in 7th Grade, I'm mistaken and given 'scrubiness'. That's not cool but you've gotta shake it off, let it roll off. I deal with it. There's not one technique for getting rid of bullies. Zena: I've only had one bully at our school but I just got up my courage and said 'Shut up. Go away! You're mean. I don't like you'. That's when I was in first grade. Now, I'm really friends with everybody. Josh: Actually the bullies I have had, I didn't retaliate. I went home, had a Snickers bar and got upset. Basically, with bullies, it doesn't make sense to bully them back. It doesn't make it better for you. You're just as wrong. If you can resolve it peacefully, that's the best answer. AGW: Alex, you get badly slimed in this film. What was that stuff like? Alex: That was the most horrible experience of my professional life ever. That was so disgusting. We had the stuff that was supposed to be mud which is the stuff they use at spas for mudbaths but it really wasn't nice because I had to jump in it. Then the wood chips were (makes a sound like he's choking), sticking to me and then they put lettuce, pickles and oatmeal with a crust that would get all hard and there would be something disgusting in there, all crunchy. The showers in the trailers weren't the best and I'd be peeling stuff off me. Three days of this, oatmeal and slime and trash. AGW: There are a lot of animals in this film. Alex:
Counting Max Keeble, I've done like three movies with chimpanzees. I did
a movie called Race to Space which was like the 1960's when chimps went
into space. AGW: What advice would you give kids who want to act? Alex: Don't expect it to completely explode in this huge thing all at once. It's step by step and be patient.. that's redundant. Don't get a big head about it. Don't say "Oh, I'm an actor..da, da,da da'. If you really like it, go and do it. Look up an agent and go try out. Zena; If you're going to do it, go all the way. Get the newspapers and stuff and go to the auditions and you'll get there if you really want to. AGW: Alex, did you ever kiss a girl with a romantic song playing in the background? Alex: Whoa, the most romantic song I ever kissed someone to was probably something non-romantic like "Jump Around my House of Pain" or something. Whatever was playing in the background at the party at the time. (He starts singing) 'Jump around. Jump up and get down, jump, jump'. Marvin Gaye, 'Let's Get it On', that's a great song. AC-DC, "You Shook Me All Night Long", that's a great song. There's gotta be something by Queen. AGW:
Zena, what do you do if you like someone? Zena: I become their friend and see what happens. AGW: Zena, you were in Summer Catch with Freddie Prinz. You had to wear a bunch of silly mascot costumes. Was that gross or fun? Zena; I was excited. I read the script. This is so cool, lobsters, clams, woo woo, you know, fishermen. Josh: She's a good date, I'm tellin' ya. I think it would be cool. 'This is my date, the lobster. We've got history'. AGW: What do you like to do when you aren't working? Alex: I like to read, write and take pictures, bike and I like skateboarding. I skate at the bowl in Santa Barbara. AGW: Josh, as "Robe" you were wearing one all through the movie. Was it comfortable? Josh: Definitely. They custom made it for me. It had big pockets so I could go over to craft service (the caterers on the set), put a couple of danish in there and go back to the set. It was great.
