Miley Cyrus:

at Hollywood Highland

by Lynn B

Hannah Montana, aka Miley Cyrus, performs at a free concert in Los AngelesOn a sunny California day, pop sensation Miley Cyrus, or should I say Hannah Montana, gave a free concert to her fans in the courtyard of the trendy tinseltown shopping haven on the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. (this is where the Kodak Theater is). Miley is celebrating the release of her 2-disc “Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus” CD and the DVD release of “Hannah Montana: Pop Star Profile” (which we’ll be reviewing separately).

Choosing songs from the new album like the hit “Nobody’s Perfect”, “Hannah” took the stage after an intro by her dad (on the show and in real life) Billy Ray Cyrus. The blonde popstar’s hair was up in a cute ponytail and she was a peppy vision in a blue sequined top over light blue jeans. The crowd was packed with tweens, young teens and their parents and Hannah got them fired up and bouncy right away only to have the sound system go out on her a couple of times. Like a trooper, the entertainer just kept going and encouraged her fans to sing along.

Later Hannah morphed into Miley and returned to the stage in her long, chestnut hair, a cute yellow plaid mini-skirt, over-the-knee socks, high top tennies and a silver metallic top to perform some of the tracks from her solo debut album. The “Meet Miley Cyrus” part of the CD showcases Miley’s own songwriting skills on seven of the ten songs.

At the afterparty at Hollywood/Highland’s “Level 3 Club”, we munched on snacks and got to sit down with Miley for a great, high-energy chat that proved to us that she is one of the most “normal” young teen celebs out there. Miley speaks with a slight Southern accent. She had a cold and so did we so we commiserated then chatted about clothes, boys, music, crushes, secrets.. you know, the important stuff… as well as school, her TV show, dancing and how this young star stays so grounded when others have been going wildly off the tracks lately. Check it out..

Miley CyrusAGW: You handled yourself very well today when you lost your sound. You just kept going. Is that something your dad taught you or did you just learn that on your own?

Miley: I just kind of learned on my own. I mean, what can I do about it? I can’t go fix the sound right now; keep singing and, hopefully, the microphone will turn on any time now.

AGW: Where do you go to school?

Miley: I go to school at Options for Youth. I have a teacher there and people are like, ‘I’ll bet he gives you an easy time’. No way! He’s more hardcore. He’s like ‘everybody is watching me because of you so get it done’. I’ve only got one more week to do, if I focus.

AGW: Is that a hard thing for you to do, focus on your studies?

Miley: Oh my gosh, yes because I’m like, ‘okay I got that question. So, mom anyway….’. I’m making up all these things to get out of work. I’m actually glad to be sick this time because I’m like ‘momeeee, everyone else, if they were sick, they would get off of school’. I used that one today.

AGW: How is going to school different from what we see on your show?

Miley: Oh, that is easy compared to what I do at school. If you went to my school, you’d see a whole different side of me. Okay, it’s really time to get down and study.

AGW: What are your favorite and least favorite subjects?

Miley: Language is my favorite. Math, I really do not like. I’m pretty good at it but I just can’t focus on it for my life. I don’t like numbers. I’ve decided that. This year I don’t like numbers.

AGW: This new DVD is packed with Jake Ryan stories from your show. Did you have anything to do with picking those?

Miley: The fans were like obsessed with Jake Ryan. Hey he’s very good looking so I wouldn’t blame them and I’ll buy the DVD! I think that was really funny that the Jake episodes got picked.

AGW: What else is on it besides the episodes?

Miley: We have “Nobody’s Perfect” music video. It was a live performance and [“The Real Miley Cyrus”] with the cast, crew and also my family.

AGW: Where does the Jake storyline stand on the show right now?

Miley: He’s back from his movie and in the episode that just premiered we break up in it so I’m not sure when he’s coming back.

AGW: You play a secretive role on the show. Do you have any big secrets in life?

Miley: Any big secrets? I don’t keep secrets because I’m no good at them. I could sit there and be like ‘yeah, I promise I won’t tell’ and then ‘ohmygosh, Mom, you’re not going to believe what happened’ five minutes later, so if you’re my friend I’d say don’t tell me a secret because you’ll be coming over to my house and everyone will be like ‘ohmygosh, I don’t believe you like him’.

Miley CyrusAGW: Sounds like you just experienced this?

Miley: Yeah. I saw my best friend the other day and she got so mad. She works at Smoothie King and she has a crush on her manager and I went home and told my mom and as soon as she walked in the door my mom was like ‘oh, I had no idea that you like him. I’m friends with his mother. I will totally talk to her for you’. I’m like ‘ooo, no mom, please stop. She’s gonna kill me’. I just stopped asking secrets. I don’t want to know. Don’t tell me.

AGW: Who is your celebrity crush?

Miley: Orlando Bloom and some of my really good friends Aly and A.J. [sister act singers whose songs have been featured on the Herbie Fully Loaded and Ice Princess soundtracks] they met him. I’m like, ‘we’re no longer friends unless you have him over to the house, have a little party…

AGW: You wrote or co-wrote some of the songs on your new CD. Where do you get your ideas?

Miley: Mostly just from real life experiences that happened with my family and my friends. I was writing songs last night. Whenever I get the chance. [her voice cracks] Wow, my voice is actually gone. I guess I shouldn’t have stayed up until 2 o’clock in the morning writing songs. You just get so into it that you can’t stop.

AGW: What is the songwriting process for you?

Miley: Just sing them out or play my guitar. I’ve actually had a melody on my guitar since the day I learned how to play guitar. When I was seven I started learning how to play guitar. I had this idea and that’s the only song that I can’t write lyrics to. I’ll get it one day.

AGW: You wear two clothing styles on the show; Hannah and Miley. Is either one your own personal style?

Miley:[indicating her outfit] Well, this is basically my style. I don’t necessarily think that I would be let out of the house in short skirts every day but, for the performances, it’s cute. I’m very into like American Apparel, like tube sox, like what I have on today. Every woman who talks to me is like ‘what’s with those sox?’ That’s my style so whatever.

AGW: What do you watch on TV.

Hannah Montana, aka Miley CyrusMiley: I’m a big reality show person. I’ll be into shows from MTV, ‘The Real World’, ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and then also big on ‘That’s So Raven’ and ‘Suite Life’. I’ve kinda gotten into those shows with my little sister. I’m like ‘hey, this is pretty good’. Also I’ll watch ‘Friends’. I watch a little bit of everything.

AGW: If you weren’t in ‘Hannah Montana’ do you think you would watch it?

Miley: I don’t think about it when I watch it. Because I’ve already worked on that show for a week, I know everything that happens already so when I watch it I’m kind of spaced out, ‘okay, I’ve seen this already’. It’s hard when you’ve worked on it for a week to think about it any more. I try to see what I like about it and what the fans can look forward to.

AGW: Would you want to go on “Dancing with the Stars” like your dad did?

Miley: [laughs] No, thank you! I do not. I’ve seen my dad’s feet like blistered from the choreographer going, ‘quick, quick, quick’ and ‘turn, turn, turn’ over and over so I don’t think I’m going on “Dancing with the Stars”.

AGW: Are you a better dancer than he is?

Miley: Now, my dad knows the real moves. He’s like ‘ok, now do the sashay’ or whatever he’s supposed to be doing, and ‘turn and upjump quick’ and whatever it is and I’m like, ‘yeah, dad. I’m just going to be dancing and you can do all the fancy stuff’.

AGW: What’s the toughest thing about living in the spotlight?

Miley: Just having a camera on you all the time gets kind of frustrating. If you make mistakes, the whole world knows about it. It’s not just your family or friends. If you say something really dumb or do something really stupid, the whole world knows about it. My friends will call me, ‘did you see that commercial? You are such a nerd’. I’m like ‘thanks, guys’.

AGW: Do you have to do chores at home?

Miley: I do. I just learned how to do the dishwasher. It was like a commercial, the bubbles started coming out. ‘Oh, that little container, that was what I was supposed to do?’. And I shrank my mom’s favorite pair of jeans trying to do the laundry. We can’t put our jeans in the drier. We hang them outside, the old-fashioned way but I put them in the drier, now she has really cute capris.

AGW: What is the definition of a friend?

Miley: Actually, I have a song called ‘True Friend’ and it says you’re supposed to be there through the ups and the downs. A lot of things, in my life, have been very positive but there have been some really negative parts and things that aren’t so fun to deal with, not only for me, but for my friends who have to hear about it. That’s what makes a true friend; listening through everything.

AGW: What qualities does a guy have to have if you are going to accept a date with him?

Miley: He’d better turn on that charm real quick [laughs]. I’m from the South and it’s like Southern hospitality. Our family is so funny. We’re set in our own traditions. When you walk in the house, shoes off. With us it’s like ‘yes, sir’. We’re fun but it’s about getting out the respect, not only for our parents but my brothers and sisters. Just common courtesy. Turning on the charm and not being fake about it.

AGW: He’d better be a gentleman.

Miley: Exactly. If my dad is like ‘well, that boy is really nice’. That is going to be a nice guy. He has to approve and I’ve got high standards as I should. My dad says, as I should.

AGW: Do you think you are a good sister?

Miley: I don’t know if my sister would say that right now. We had an argument last night because she wanted to sleep with the TV on and I didn’t. We’re sharing a room for a little while. She sleeps with night lights and I didn’t want that on last night so we got in a little argument. But, I think I’m a pretty good sister. When I go on tours I get presents and I bribe the kids. You’re gonna love me. I’m the middle child. We fight back and forth but my mom is like ‘rest on it then get up and say what you have to say’. When I’m tired or haven’t eaten all day, I get cranky.

AGW: What is your favorite pig out?

Miley: I like shrimp. I’ll sit here and eat a whole thing of shrimp. I’m a vegetarian so that’s the only meat I’ll eat. I’ll eat fries and stuff. Home cookin’.

AGW: How would you spend the perfect night in?

Miley: Shopping, eating and being with my friends at my house, just chillin’. I’ll find a way to shop online with my friends. We watch movies or Tivo all the movies on TV.

AGW: What is your must-have accessory now?

Miley: I can’t really wear necklaces that much. I wear one [silver] chain all the time but they bounce around on stage too much. Bracelets I’m really into. My mom got me a cute one that says ‘dream’ on it.

AGW: Advice to your peers?

Hannah Montana, aka Miley CyrusMiley: Just believe in yourself and be true to yourself. It’s a hard road to the top but it’s easy to come right back down so you’ve got to never stop working and keep yourself rested and, when you need a break, take a break. That’s what I’m doing for the rest of this week.

AGW: What do you do to stay in shape?

Miley: I ride my bike four miles every day. I love bikes.

AGW: What do you like about touring with your music?

Miley: I think just looking at the crowd’s faces and hearing them sing your words. I try to keep them as positive as possible. ‘Life is what you make it’ and forgetting about the jerky guys. I’m hearing them say positive words and that means a lot to me.

AGW: Have you ever been grounded?

Miley: My dad has never grounded me. He tells my mom to do it. ‘She was so bad today. You’ve got to ground her’. My dad and I got in our first real fight ever yesterday because I had to wash my make-up off and I said, ‘well, I’m not going to get in the car and see all my friends without make-up on’. I went and got my make up done but then I got into all the products and started doing my own and my dad’s like ‘okay, I’ve been waiting here an hour. Do not leave me waiting in the car! Get in the car now!’ He told my mom and she was like ‘I don’t expect her to go out with no make-up on’. She took my side. She’s smart like that.

AGW: Sounds like your mom rocks! What product did you like?

Miley: This really cool lip plumper stuff, ‘Lip Venom’. I’ve been using that.

AGW: Any tips for looking good on the red carpet?

Miley: My mom is always getting on me because I slouch. I do something weird like put my arms forward and [she hunches over to demonstrate] and she’s ‘you look miserable’. I think it’s always present yourself as very confident, stand up straight and look like you’re ready to take on the world.

AGW: What musical artists do you like?

Miley: I listen to everything but I like Willy Nelson and Dolly Parton and the old bluegrass type thing but I listen to a little bit of everything.

AGW: What is the most important advice your dad has taught you?

Miley: He always says, ‘if you ain’t havin’ fun, it ain’t workin’’ It’s always to have a good time.
