Oprah was born on January 29, 1954 in Koscusko, Mississippi. Her parents name is Vernita Lee and Vernon Winfrey. They were never married. Her dad Vernon, who was twenty years old at the time of her birth, was in the service. Some time after Oprah was born, Vernita Lee moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to look for a better job. She left Oprah with Vernon Winfrey's mother. Her grandmother was much in church so Oprah's spend very much time in a church. There were plenty of opportunities for Oprah to show her talents. Her abilities to read, speak, and memorize were unbelievable.
When Oprah was fourteen she gave birth to a premature baby that later died. She moved in with her father who provided her with discipline. Her father was very strict. Oprah turned her life around. When Oprah was nineteen, she got her first broadcasting job at WVOL in Nashville. 1972, Oprah dropped out of school and became the first black anchorwoman at Nashville's WTVF-TV. She moved to Baltimore in 1976. After being co-anchor at WJZ-TV for two years, she was hired to host the station's chat show, People Are Talking.
In 1984, after eight years at WJZ, she became the host of A.M. Chicago. In 1985, she received an Oscar Nomination for Best Supporting Actress in the movie The Color Purple.
In 1986, Oprah got the program, The Oprah Winfrey Show. She started Harpo Productions (Oprah spelled backwards) and purchased her program. In 1988, Oprah was awarded a diploma from Tennessee State University. In January 1994, President Clinton signed the "Oprah Bill," a bill to protect children.
