Paul and Matt:

Superheroes

by Lynn B.

Paul Wesley in FALLENBack to the ABC all-star party at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Pasadena. After talking to the “Hannah Montana” girls, we decided to go stalking for some hot guys and we hit the jackpot! Out on the veranda, we ran into a half angel and a mystery man who has no human emotions. Freaky! The actors playing “Fallen’s” Aaron (Paul Wesley) and “Kyle XY’s” lead Kyle (Matt Dallas) are far from freaky and both are smokin’ hot! Here comes Paul our way. He looks casual cute as we show him our press pass and find a place to sit and chat.

AGW: Paul, do you get to come up with ideas for your show?

Paul: The new executive producer and director have become friends of mine and we’re gonna be shooting more episodes. I can’t wait to sit down and give them my ideas. They’ve been so amazing giving me creative freedom to change dialogue on the day. They’ve been incredibly accommodating.

AGW: Would you like to direct an episode?

Paul: (He beams and grabs my arm) Oh my God, yes. Are you reading my mind? That’s like my dream! I’m writing a film right now. I think most actors have that aspiration. I think directing and writing and acting all intertwine and you should do what you’re not used to doing. If you play the same character all the time it’s gonna be boring. I just want to create stuff.

AGW: What about doing a feature film on your TV break?

Paul: My break is actually right now. We’re going to go back in May so I’m trying to take a lot of meetings. I want to do something before I go back.

AGW: Who do you want to guest star on the show?

Paul: Probably Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He’s my favorite actor of all time. He’s an absolute genius. Imagine him playing some villainous devil guy. He was such a good villain in Mission Impossible 3. I love that guy.

AGW: Where did you come from and how did you get an acting start?

Paul: Born and raised in New Jersey, had no real ambitious to act until I was forced to do a school play in elementary school and then they’re like ‘you have to sing’. The teacher put me in everything. I did this play and my mom was like ‘Oh I love what you’re doing’. And I’m like ‘I love this too’ so she threw me into modeling and I did that and then it just parlayed into being all about acting.

AGW: Where is home now?

Paul: I call L.A. home now but we shoot in Vancouver but I’m hearing rumors that we might move down to L.A.

AGW: What can you tell us about the new season of “Fallen”?

Paul: The pilot was good but this is about twenty notches up; more serious, more mature. It’s like Batman Begins. It’s is so dark and interesting and heroic. There’s some amazing new characters and new actors. Bryan Cranston (“Malcolm in the Middle”), William Lee (The Departed) and I’m really looking forward to everybody seeing it.

AGW: What would you love for your Aaron character to be able to do?

Paul: I can’t wait for him to become a man. I’m waiting for him to pass that stage of boyhood. He still so young. I love that about him but I want him to grow up a bit. He’s nineteen.

AGW: You’re 24. A lot of actors play really young characters for a long time and finally get to where they say “I don’t want to play a teen guy anymore”.

Paul: Yeah, you just sort of get over it. I’ve been doing it for so many years. I met with some people last week to play a young lawyer and they are like ‘we love him but he can’t play a lawyer’ [too young looking]. So, I’m looking forward to some day playing some more mature characters. But, this character on "Fallen" is so complex that I’m not complaining. I love it.

AGW: What actress would you love to see on the show?

Paul: I’m so cliché. Angelina Jolie. She’d be great.

Paul is starving and goes off for some munchies and we zero in on cute Matt Dallas who looks totally preppie in gray slacks and gray, black and white stripe sweater. This guy has amazing blue eyes and he’s tall!

Matt Dallas in KYLE XYAGW: (looking up at those blue eyes) So what is going to happen on the next season of “Kyle” that you can tell us?

Matt: They won’t tell me very much but it’s really more about the development of a superhero. Kyle is honing his skills and exploring his abilities. Also, last season, they kind of kept the two storylines separate as to the family and the mystery. This year, they are bringing the mystery and danger directly to the front door of the family’s house. It was the most exciting thing about the show anyway so to tie it all together will be really cool. The few ideas I’ve heard are so cool. I’m excited to get back to work.

AGW: Who would you want as a guest star?

Matt: Okay, it’s a cliché but to work with Johnny Depp would be amazing. But I think Brittany Murphy is so entertaining and she looks like she’d be fun to work with. I would just love to work with her. She can sing too. She just did a song in Happy Feet. I think she’ll amaze everybody.

AGW: Do you get to contribute to ideas for your character?

Matt: They originally just kind of wrote it but they really let me have a lot of freedom as far as how I wanted to play the character. His naiveté at first, they let me have a lot of control as far as how he was presented. There was a lot of open communication. They’ve been really cool.

AGW: Is he going to be less uptight or more “normal” this year?

Matt: Well, Kyle started out as a newborn and went through all the different stages of being a child and a teenager and really became a man by the end of the season. So, next season I’m planning on taking that farther.

AGW: How old is he really?

Matt: They don’t know but they estimate about sixteen or seventeen. But, first season everybody took care of Kyle so this year it’s really Kyle’s turn to take care of everybody else.

AGW: What is on TV that you like?

Matt: I’m addicted to “Lost”. I don’t watch a lot of TV but I got the first season of the show on DVD and got hooked. Then I got the second season, now I’m all caught up and can’t wait for it to come back. Also, “Nip Tuck” is awesome. “Dirt”, I accidentally got hooked on that.

AGW: Did you do a feature film on your break from “Kyle”?

Matt: I did. I just finished shooting it. It’s called Babysitter Wanted. Actually, Bruce Thomas who plays the dad in “Kyle” is in the movie as well. We go back to shoot next month so I didn’t have a lot of time. Hopefully, we’ll get something in on our next hiatus.

AGW: Are you at all worried about getting stuck playing a teen because you have a young face? (he’s 24)

Matt: You know what? I will play high school as long as I can. Why not?

AGW: Are you into directing or writing an episode?

Matt: Right now I’m happy sticking with the acting but, eventually, producing is something I’d really like to get into. It’s really cool when something really becomes your baby so I’d like to get into producing, maybe one day directing or writing as well.

AGW: Were you into science fiction as a kid?

Matt: A little bit. I wasn’t that into it but, now that I’ve started working in the genre, I’ve become a lot more aware of all the other sci-fi stuff around me and I’ve started to get hooked. Like “Heroes” is another amazing show in the genre.

AGW: What music do you like to listen to?

Matt: Damien Rice is one of my all time favorites. His new CD just came out and it’s been playing over and over in a loop in my car. I think he’s an amazing craftsman and artist and musician.

AGW: Favorite movie last year?

Matt: I’m a big movie guy. I go to a lot of them. Little Miss Sunshine and Little Children. Little in both titles but totally different movies. They’re so different but so great.

AGW: What would you like to see Kyle do that they haven’t let him do yet?

Matt: I would like to see Kyle get a bit more of a romantic story going on. They flirted with it the first season but I’m saying ‘come on, let’s get Kyle some action. He needs some action!’ I’ve been pushing the producers. Let’s get some [hot] girl in there. Although we’ve got Amanda (Kirsten Prout) and she’s beautiful and an amazing actress. She’s very young but she’s great but I’m up for some action for Kyle.

AGW: I’m sure the fans wouldn’t complain about that!
