REESE WITHERSPOON: LEGALLY BLONDE....AGAIN

by: Lynn B.

She's on top of the world, with cute husband Ryan, daughter Ava and another baby on the way, Reese Witherspoon is in London shooting Vanity Fair, in which she plays poor but ambitious heroine Becky Sharp. Back home, we get to catch the second installment of the adventures of fashion-conscious, good-hearted sorority girl/lawyer turned political activist Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde which Reese is executive producing through her "Type A" films. Reese believes Elle can be an inspiration to young girls and took time out on her London set to talk to the press about her pregnancy, working in England, dealing with tabloid gossip and being "blonde" once again.

AGW: What is different this time around? What made you want to do a sequel?

Reese: I was a little nervous because the first one did so well. I just thought I don't want to re-tread the same storyline. But you have to cover some of the same bases because people want to see her triumph out of a difficult situation. I was very interested in making a film in the vein of "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" and having it be a woman. Because I imagine myself as a young girl seeing a woman with the potential of political power and I just thought that would be really inspiring.

AGW: Executive producing this time must have put you in control of many aspects of the movie.

Reese: Yeah. I have never before been involved in casting or helping chose the director for a film. So that was very exciting for me. I went through the script with [writer] Kate Condell and we would make up jokes together and have different ideas and concepts. I would wake up in the middle of the night and go: "We have to have a million dog march..." And have all the Delta Nu's come to Washington!

AGW: Is there a favorite line of yours that got in the movie?

Reese: I like everything Paulette [Jennifer Coolidge] says. When she says: 'You look so good. You look like the 4th of July. It makes me want to eat a hot dog'.

AGW: How much of you is like Elle? There must be something you bring to that character...

Reese: Yeah, I think there is a certain aspect of my personality that I try to bring. I try to see the positive in people. It's kind of hard in Hollywood sometimes. People try to spin things negatively. But I think I am just a real optimist. Of course you have days when you are just really disappointed in people's personal choices. But I think ultimately I try to understand the
motivation behind why people do things.

AGW: Are you a shop-a-holic?

Reese: No. I wouldn't say that. But I do like a nice pair of shoes. I have a lot of shoes. I like to squirrel them away and I'll wear the same pair of trainers every day. I have a lot. I inherited all of Elle's shoes from both films. I would say I have about 150 pairs of shoes.

AGW: Does show business and promoting movies seem less important when you have a baby on board and you have bigger priorities?

Reese: I think it puts things in perspective. It is a career for me. It is what
I do for a living. And it isn't my life. It is just one aspect of my life.

AGW: How is the pregnancy thing going?

Reese: It's going great. I am between 4 and 5 months. I don't really know exactly. I have been working so much. It's funny because with the first baby you count every week. And you get "What to Expect When You Are Expecting" and read "Week 19...what's going on?" Now I am like, "How pregnant am I? I forget." I still don't know my due date.

AGW: How does your pregnancy work with shooting Vanity Fair?

Reese: Well, I called up Mira (the director) when I found out I was pregnant and I said, "We have a situation to deal with." And she had been in pre-production for so long and I told her 'If you want to make this movie, just say the word and I will show up and we will do it'. So I think that kind of took her by surprise. She had the script re-written by Julian Fellows. And he incorporated a pregnancy because in the book she has a child. And for the rest of it, there's a lot of cloth and a lot of hiding behind staircases and bookcases and tables.

AGW: There was gossip that you and Ryan were having problems and now you are adding to your family.

Reese: Isn't that curious? Because don't all those stories have so much truth to them? I just think sometimes when your life isn't that sensational they just try to spin something interesting. I have read all sorts of interesting things about myself, like I hate America, I am moving to Europe...

AGW: We heard you moved to London...

Reese: I know. I can't wait to see where I live. Then I read somewhere that I have a $10 million mansion in New York...

AGW: Do you just get sick of all the tabloid gossip on you?

Reese: Sure. I have days when I am being followed to Ava's nursery and she is three years old and she is like, 'Who is that man over there in the ski mask taking pictures of us?' They literally act like criminals. And they treat you like you are a criminal. Sometimes I feel like I am one of the FBI's 10 Most Wanted I am followed so much. [laughs] I mean, then the pictures that come out of this whole escapade are me pushing a shopping trolley. You know? Pushing a shopping cart into the grocery store and smelling vegetables. I think, 'oooh this is riveting'. But, I think rather than fretting about my life being whatever, you just have to kind of make peace with it. You kind of make a choice in life whether you are going to belly ache about your state of things or whether you are gonna just get on through with it. This is my life.

AGW: How is your experience in Europe going?

Reese: It is fantastic for me because there just isn't as much focus on my own life. Ryan and I can really go anywhere in peace. We have had a really
great experience here so far.

AGW: Have you gone in search of your Scottish roots yet? Witherspoon is a very famous name there.

Reese: No. But my dad is coming next week and I think he is going to take a little trip up there. He is very interested in the family genealogy. [Witherspoon] is my favorite ancestor who came from Scotland and went to America and signed the Declaration of Independence - John Witherspoon.

AGW: Did anything happen during "Legally Blonde 2" that made you pull your hair out and think, "Why did I take on all this?"

Reese: Yeah. I mean there were days when we weren't making the schedule and we'd only get one scene when we needed to get three scenes in that day. But overall it was a very positive experience. I learned so much that there is so much that is out of your hands. The part to me that was just so much fun was helping to choose the cast because I am so passionate about other actors.

AGW: Did you take a period film like Vanity Fair to sort of balance out your resume?

Reese: Yeah, part of it is that. And part of it is getting the opportunity to work with somebody like Mira which I never would have had before without the success of Legally Blonde and the fact that I can help her make that movie is really exciting to me. Also the character Becky Sharp that I am playing is the absolute antithesis of Elle Woods. She is conniving and manipulating and [hot]. It's just miles away...

AGW: Elle eyes the White House at the end of this film. Do you think we will have a female president in our lifetime?

Reese: I think so. I hope so. I think it is great when you can inspire people in films. Hopefully some little girl who is 7 years old will really think about it.

AGW: Your movie is opening with a lot of other big films. Terminator 3 and Charlie's Angels? Are you concerned?

Reese: I think there is room for all of them. They are three very different movies. "Charlie's Angels" is obviously a movie that is going to appeal a lot to young men. Those are three fantastic women who I like a lot. So I can't do anything but wish them all the success in the world. And Arnold Schwarzenegger was so nice to me as a kid. He like flew me out to Los
Angeles to have all these meetings with these great directors. So I can't
begrudge him anything either.

AGW: Elle is an animal rights activist in the film. What is your stand on that?

Reese: The funny thing about her cause - because we had a lot of discussion about which cause Elle would champion - I always see these people on TV talking about anti-fur and animal rights and I just always think there are such bigger issues, you know? What about the national debt and children are dying all over the world. But I think what is important and why we chose this cause is that there has to be someone for everything. There has to be a champion for everything. Otherwise no one would care about the trees. No one would care about the oceans. Even though it doesn't seem like a big deal for a lot of people it seems like a very specific Elle Woods kind of concern.

AGW: Elle has little Bruiser. Do you have any dogs?

Reese: I do. I have three dogs - an English bulldog, a French bulldog, and a Chihuahua named Chi Chi Rodriguez. They all get along.
