We're Hangin' With.....

SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT

"Bulletproof"?

by: Lynn B.

Hey, who is this buff, action dude kicking it alongside Chinese superstar martial artist Chow Yun-Fat? Can't be that hilarious guy from American Pie, Road Trip and Dude, Where's My Car can it? Yep, that's him. It's a brand new, kung fu fightin' Seann doing his own stunts in the actioner Bulletproof Monk. Scott is one of the most friendly-to-the-press actors in Hollywood. He tells you everything you need to know and more and all with a great sense of humor. It was that way on the beach in Malibu for the American Pie 2 press interviews and was the same recently when we talked to the tanned, newly dark-haired actor at the Four Seasons hotel in L.A.

AGW: Was it important to you to play something other than the usual funny guy of your previous films?

Seann: It's a blessing to make people laugh but every step you take is for a reason. I did make the decision. I feel like I'm a very physical guy. My agent said over the summer, 'We need to find you your Mission Impossible'. I know I can do it. I don't know if the rest of Hollywood would think that. We just have to prove to them that I can. It wasn't like I was going from American Pie 2 to [something serious like] Philadelphia. I really just said to the guys, 'I have to do this movie. You don't understand how passionate I am about it. To work with Yun-Fat is important for me. I will work harder than anyone else will. I'll do the best that I can, and that's a lot,' and I said, 'Just give me the part'.

AGW: You were pretty buff in this film. Is that the norm for you?

Seann: I've always been working out because I grew up playing sports and when I got American Pie, I thought 'The guy's not going to be funny if he's in shape,' and I gained some weight and got frumpy. In Dude Where's My Car?, I was a stoner and I thought that he should be a little chubby. When I met (director) Paul Hunter for this film, I said, 'Look, I don't look like this normally. I will change my body. I just need an adequate time to train for the martial arts'. I probably lost like twenty pounds. It would've been a weird look for 'Bulletproof Monk' to be this big guy waddling around.

AGW: How extensive was the training?

Seann: Probably about six hours a day, a lot of stretching. The wire stuff was easy but after I landed on my head a couple of times I'd get freaked out. I had to do training while we were shooting because I had to learn. I wanted to do every single stunt because I was physically able. That was the goal for me.

AGW: We heard that you got hurt.

Seann: Yeah, we were doing a scene where I get dragged along the rooftop, which was fun. It doesn't really hurt but the next day I couldn't move my back. I had a spasm and felt like I was dying. Chow Yun- Fat picks me up and puts me over his shoulder and I'm 'what's happening here?' and he's walking to my trailer. I'm like 'he's a hero'. He gently put me down and he starts working on my back. I was in the worst pain I'd ever been in. I couldn't even breathe. Then I started to breathe. He was so concerned about me, he was such a great guy. He said 'You're stupid. You do too many stunts. I told you'. 'But, I'm the comedy guy. You're Chow Yun-Fat.. I've gotta do this'. Ever since then I can't walk the same. Not really. I was fine.

AGW: How were you at the wire work and other new stunts?

Seann: The wire work was the easiest for me because a lot of it just requires like a core strength that I had from playing sports. That scene with the pipe, that was a problem because they showed me the choreography like two and a half weeks before, and I was like, 'You know this is a weapon, I've never done weapon training before'. I would practice in my hotel room and I would whack myself in the head and cleared all the furniture and break mirrors and I'd have to tell production that I broke another mirror. After a while, I just kind of broke it down and I started getting it. The stuff that really sucked was learning gymnastics. We would do back flips and front flips and front handsprings and stuff like that. It was just like not knowing where you were in the air and maybe landing on your neck.

AGW: So how was working with martial arts actor Chow Yun-Fat?

Seann: I was quite nervous. I just didn't want to mess up the movie up for him. He was like the Godfather on the set. He knew everybody's name and made sure everybody was having a good time. He wanted everybody to know how important they were. He'd say 'don't be so manic. We're making a movie. Just have fun'. He'd get mad at me for doing all my stunts. "you're going to kill yourself, kid.' When I decided to be an actor, I went to visit my brother and he had introduced me to Chow Yun-Fat's movies. I was like 'that guy is the coolestin the world. I wanna be him'.

AGW: Was it fun working with hot co-star Jaime King?

Seann: (grins). She was so great. She's going to be huge. I knew that I was lucky. Although I didn't get to make out with her other than in that one scene. I messed up. I started being the big brother guy. I should have said right away, 'why don't we go celebrate?' I said stuff like 'Do you gotta go grocery shopping?'. But we made out in the movie.

AGW: Is it true that you actually worked in a movie theater like your character?

Seann: Yeah. I ran the theater but we'd only get two people a night. I hated the job at the time. I'd get angry and make the popcorn really buttery. People would come back with butter dripping off their chin. I'd say "I'm sorry". I told them [the filmmakers] 'I can play this part. I worked in a movie theater, man'. They asked if I wanted to train with the projector. I told them it shouldn't be a problem but I didn't remember anything and film was flying everywhere. I started throwing things and said 'how about if I just throw things' and it worked. I was just trying to find a way to get out of it. But I could identify with this character. I'm probably much more of an introvert than people know. For three years I was auditioning for things, I had no experience. I always had this feeling of never knowing if an opportunity was going to come my way. That's what this character is like. He's got a big heart.

AGW: This film is loosely based on the comic book. Had you read it before the film?

Seann: I actually hadn't heard of the comic book before, but it was quite different. The comic book was a lot darker, but I liked it a lot. The only thing that was a problem was that I'm not Asian and in the comic book, he's Asian.

AGW: After this you did more action in a film with The Rock?

Seann: I don't know if they have a title, but that's going to be huge. There's a lot of action, but different action. I play a crazy guy who's really smart and really wild and spontaneous. It's got an 'Indiana Jones' vibe kind of, a little bit like Lethal Weapon. Rock is awesome and Christopher Walken is in it. It's really cool.

AGW: Everyone says that actor Chris Walken is wonderful but crazy. What do you think?

Seann: I'll tell you a story. One day, I saw him and he was so sad, and I said, 'Hey, Chris, are you okay?' He goes, 'Yeah, I'm okay.' I was like, 'Are you sure?' He was like, 'I'm here in L.A., I'm all by myself and it's my birthday, and I don't want anyone to know.' I said, 'I'm sorry, man. Happy Birthday.' He said, 'I'm just kidding, it's not my birthday.' He goes, 'But you do that on a movie set, I swear, two hours later, they'll bring you a big birthday cake.' He goes, 'I'm going to do it on this one,' and I was like, 'This guy is great. He's as crazy as me,'
