1/28/02 We're Hangin' With.... SCHUYLER FISK Schuyler
Fisk: The Second Generation Speaks Out!
Schuyler starred in "The Babysitter's Club" based on the series of popular books, was in "Snow Day" and "My Friend Joe" and now plays Ashley, Colin Hank's devoted girlfriend in the hit comedy film Orange County. She talked to us, from her home in Virginia, about being a second generation actor, musical tastes, college goals and inspirations, working with Colin Hanks, getting bitten by a co-star and tons more.... AGW: Your name is so unusual. Where did it come from? Schuyler: There's a town near where I grew up called Schuyler (Skylar) and they spell it that way. AGW: The fictional book "Straight Jacket" inspires Colin's character in the film. Was there a book that inspired you? Schuyler: Yes. I read a book of essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson when I was in high school and it completely changed my life; one (essay) especially called 'Self-Reliance'. I read it all the time. It gives me this sense of confidence. It's saying 'Be your own person. Do your own thing'. I'm like 'yeah. That's what I needed to hear'. AGW: You have to be so proud of your mom who is up for awards this year for her role in "In the Bedroom". Schuyler: I'm sooo proud of her. Right now I think we're each other's biggest fan. AGW: Did you decide to be an actress because of your mom? Schuyler: I think it's just in my blood. It was something I was always doing since I was a tot. I did a lot of theater and acting school. I played Annie. I did a lot of musical theater. I loved the attention. Then I got into film kind of randomly. When they were casting "The Babysitter's Club", my cousin was working with the director. They were looking for a lead girl and my cousin said 'well, Schuyler's about the right age and she's been doing theater'. So they called me and I went and auditioned. Those books are so big. Before I knew it, I was on a plane to L.A. AGW: Everybody says Orange County is a "Second Generation" movie because of you, Colin and even director Jake Kasdan is the son of writer/director Larry Kasdan. Does that bother you? Schuyler: Well, I see that it is (true) so I can't let it bother me. A lot of who we are is because of (our parents). We're all really proud of our parents. It's an honor to be known as the second generation. It is sometimes a little frustrating because people have preconceived ideas of your work. They expect a certain thing. You just want to do your own thing and not be effected by it. We aren't our parents. We're our own person. Hopefully when people see the movie they can separate it. AGW: Your character Ashley is really into saving animals and the environment. But, didn't the little dog in the film bite you? Schuyler: (laughs) Can you hear my dog barking in the background? The dog's name was Andy and he was a real trouper. We had worked long hours and I was always picking him up and putting him down. In the scene where he bites me, I picked him up mid-hump...he's humping Catherine's leg! So I could feel bad for him. But, he'd get a little annoyed with me. He would start growling and then, finally, he'd had it and he bit me. Then it was like 'Okay...we won't do that anymore'. I was surprised. It was my first day of shooting. I had butterflies in my stomach. It was a real ice breaker. AGW: What kind of music are you into? Schuyler: I just got the new Jack Johnson CD which I love. I like Radio Head. Billie Holiday, Bonnie Raitt, jazz.. very eclectic tastes. AGW: Teens and young adults are loving this movie and it's really pretty clean. Was it important to you that it wasn't "American Pie" gross? Schuyler: Oh the outside it kind of looks like a 'teen" movie but it's more than that. It's really about something. I feel like it has such heart, especially the relationship between Sean and Ashley. She's very much the voice of reason. It's great that it balances both the comedy (and heart). It is so funny. I think Jack (Black) is hilarious. I'm so glad he's hosting "Saturday Night Live". AGW: You and Colin have some heavy make-out scenes. Is that hard? Are you guys friends? Schuyler: It really wasn't hard. It's kind of like it was what it was. Not a big deal. It's nothing at all romantic or anything like that. It's like you're there and you're in the character. I don't get nervous and I don't get inhibitions when I'm acting but in real life I would. It would be weird. But Colin and I have a very brother and sister relationship. It's great. AGW: Ashley is willing to let her man go so he can follow his dreams. Would you be able to do that? Schuyler: Well, I haven't had the opportunity yet to have to do that but I think so. It comes down to if you love someone enough to let them go. It's so hard but I think I could do it. AGW: Was there a scene that was the most fun for you? Schuyler: There were so many. It was all so fun. One scene that was really funny was when we were in the car (driving to Stanford). All I have to do is be in the back seat asleep. That's it. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do because Colin and Jack are having this hilarious scene in the front seat and I was pinching myself so hard under the blanket. 'Don't mess up the scene, Sky, you're weak'. I felt such pressure. Colin and I still say that Jack's best work will never been seen because we blew it and laughed. We had April Fools day when we were on the set and we were like grade school kids (playing pranks). AGW: How did you get involved in the project? Schuyler: I read the script and loved it. It's very rare when I read a script that I laugh out loud. It's like when you finish it and it's like, 'My God. I have to see that or be in it'. That's how I felt. Then it was a matter of auditioning, making them want me. I auditioned several times and finally went back and read with Colin. AGW: A lot of big pro actors are in this film, John Lithgow, Garry Marshall, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis. What was it like working with all those folks?
AGW: What advice would you give to young people who want to go into acting? Schuyler: Well, as mom says, 'save your money'. But, just go for it but keep your options open and have other interests too. It's such a weird, scary and hard business. You never know for sure if it's gonna work. Right now I'm applying to schools for Fall to keep my options open. I've been craving some structured learning. I want to do it all right now and I can't. I've looked at a lot of schools, their film programs and acting programs and regular liberal arts schools and I'm torn between the three. I'm in film but there are so many things I don't know and I can never get enough of drama. I just want the college experience. I don't know yet. We'll see. AGW: What's next for you? Schuyler: I want to do something really intense next, something heavy. Now I'm just back to the grind of going out on auditions. I've been playing a lot of music. I sing and play guitar and my mom sings harmony with me. It's really fun. We love it. AGW: That's so cool. You two should do a record. Schuyler: Well, we just might.
