Taylor Kitsch

Has The Power!

by Lynn B

Taylor Kitsch in THE COVENANTIn the horror thriller The Covenant, a bunch of very hot teen male witches (warlocks?) have fun with their powers until a student at their academy turns up dead and things heat up and get serious, fast. Playing Pogue Parry, a hot, edgy biker, is newcomer Taylor Kitsch. You might have seen him in John Tucker Must Die or recently in Snakes On A Plane. Taylor called us from Austin, Texas during a break in filming for his new TV show “Friday Night Lights” based upon the footballer feature film.

AGW: Are you shooting “Friday Night Lights” now? Had you seen the film?

Taylor: It’s a day off today. I watched the movie after I did the pilot. Miles, the cocky one, there’s a character on our show that is similar but [the actor] has a different approach to it. I moved to Austin, Texas. We’re shooting everything in Austin. It’s great to be out of L.A. and working, doing great stuff.

AGW: Can you talk about your character in The Covenant?

Taylor: Pogue Parry is, more-or-less, the mediator of the group. We start blaming each other for overusing our powers and he kind of keeps his head straight and understands and knows how intense this can be if we do start using our powers on one another and blaming each other, what can happen if anyone does find out.

AGW: So he’s a good guy?

Taylor: Well, he’s got an edge to him. He’s really, really intense and wears his heart on his sleeve in regard to his friends and has their back a hundred percent but he has a motorbike and loves the adrenalin rush and will do a lot for that. Sometimes he’s guilty of using his powers for that kind of stuff. His best friend is Caleb (Steven Strait) and he sees how it can effect his family, his dad.

AGW: Do you ride a motorcycle?

Taylor: Well I can but I don’t have one. I didn’t have to learn. My character drives a Ducati which is an insane bike. They wouldn’t let me. [Some of that] was the stunt guy.

AGW: They wouldn’t let you for insurance purposes?

Taylor: Exactly and even for myself, I don’t think I want to learn on a Ducati.

AGW: Yeah, that is a serious bike. If you were to have great powers, what would you do with them? Especially if you didn’t have the problem of aging or weakening like your character does?

Taylor: Probably be pretty darn lazy. From getting my food to working out, all that stuff. I love working out but there are moments where you don’t want to. I’d definitely fly a lot. Loved that.

AGW: How was filming the flying sequences? Was being up on wires new to you?

Taylor Kitsch and his buddy, Steven Strait, in THE COVENANTTaylor: At first I loved the adrenalin stuff. Steven Strait and Sabo (Sebastian Stan) got to do it a day before us but I was the first one on after that and didn’t want to get off. We went eighteen feet per second so it was ridiculous fun. So much fun. It was Cirque Du Soliel kind of stuff. There’s a guy with all these levers and they can pull you in any direction, drop you, it’s amazing.

AGW: Do you each have separate powers or can you all defy gravity and shape shift?

Taylor: We all have the same type of powers but at the age of 18, you get the full extent and your parents can will you their power so it’s a matter of level of power.

AGW: Cool. Did the weird black contacts hurt? Describe doing a scene in them.

Taylor: Yeah. We put on contacts that cover the whole front of your eye and then put a contact on top of that. It was decently comfortable but your eyes just keep watering and watering so you put them in right before the take.

AGW: Couldn’t they get that effect with CGI?

Taylor: Yeah but it helps with the character [to really wear them]. When you have this, you look in the mirror and scare yourself.

AGW: Where did you shoot and anything spooky happen on set?

Taylor: We shot at least a third of the movie at night in the middle of nowhere on a military base outside of Montreal. It was creepy. It’s literally out in the bushes. Nothing spooky but being out there helped.

AGW: Did the cast hang out when not shooting? Did you all have fun and bond?

Taylor: We were two hours outside of Montreal so we’d come back to the hotel after. We had some time off and we all went out. Montreal is an amazing city. People are great. We all bonded pretty darn quickly, especially because it’s our first big breakout roles and we wanted the movie to be something special. We all relied on one another. I’m still literally best friends with most of the cast. Steven is in South Africa doing 10,000 B.C. and Stan just did a movie in Philadelphia. Toby Hemingway is doing Feast of Love with Morgan Freeman. Everybody’s doing great. Laura Ramsey is in Morocco doing a movie.

AGW: You are a personal trainer.. did you help keep everyone in shape?

Taylor: I did a lot with nutrition and personal training when I was in New York. On set, Steven, myself and Sabo, we were swimming twice a day and training. I’ve never been in that shape in my life. I helped out the other guys. Chace [Crawford] and Toby [Hemingway], we trained together which brought us even closer. We spent every waking moment with one another. It was three and a half months.

AGW: Of the guys, who was the biggest practical joker?

Taylor: I would have to say myself or Toby. Everybody had their moments. There’s this one take in a bar scene where I come in and I see Sebastian with Jessica Lucas, who plays my girlfriend, and Laura Ramsey at a table and Pogue’s not impressed with Sebastian being beside his girlfriend so, in one take, I come over and I grab his glass and do a disgusting spit in his glass. Sabo just kept going with it. It got a laugh. I hope that’s in the DVD.

AGW: This movie is being called The Lost Boys for this generation. Had you seen that film?

Taylor: Oh, I’ve seen that. I’ve watched that a lot. The vibe and feel of our movie and music is like that. That’s an amazing comparison. [Covenant] is more of an intense thriller than anything.

AGW: What was it like working with Renny Harlin as your director?

Taylor: Renny’s great. he lets you do your own thing and he trusts you and you know a hundred percent, he’s going to get that shot and make it look unreal so we won’t have to worry about that kind of stuff. We just have to worry about the performance and meeting those standards. He has a fun energy. There wasn’t a lot of stress on set.

AGW: What kinds of music do you like to listen to?

Taylor: Right now I’m into David Gray a lot. The Rolling Stones and David Gray are number one and two on my chart.
