First, if you met him at church, try going to church-sponsored things with him, where the two of you will be in a group of other people. Pay attention to him, but make sure you keep your friends and don't let him get between you and them. A really nice guy won't try to make you give up your friends.

The trick here is to stay with a group of people - do double-dates or go to the movies with a bunch of friends, and include the guy. If he's just hanging around to see if he can add you to his list of girls, then he'll probably get bored and go find someone who's not as smart as you are. But if he really likes you, then he'll see that you're interested in him but you don't want to give up your friends or who you are just to be with him. If he's worth the trouble, he'll respect that. If he gets to close, or tries to make you do something you don't want to do, tell him to get lost!
