Ways to Improve Safety at the Office

When you think about safety on the job you may imagine someone constructing a tall building with cranes and scattered debris in the backdrop. However, a typical office can also have many hazards. 

 

Office Attire

 

Men and women head to the office in their suits, dresses, and slacks. On their feet are high heels and oxfords, all featuring slippery soles. Instead of putting yourself in a position to have an accident, look for attractive shoes that offer safety. The same applies to those in the foodservice industry, look for women’s slip-resistant work shoes to keep your footing stable. 

 

Poor Lighting

 

Many older office buildings lack sufficient lighting or have too many lights. Either one can put a strain on the eye, which can lead to serious health concerns later on. In mild instances, workers may develop irritations to the eyes. The good news is that you can improve the quality of lighting. If the fixtures don’t offer sufficient light, update them. In the case where there’s excessive light, closing blinds or covering windows and putting in dimmers in lights will provide a better indoor environment. 

 

Restoring Air Quality

 

Offices can become breeding grounds for mold and mildew and contribute to conditions such as asthma and respiratory problems over time. Some of the culprits are poor ventilation, insufficient insulation, older doors and windows, and the use of chemicals. Common allergens like dust and pollen collect on indoor surfaces leading to illnesses and infections. Updating the space with new windows, doors, and floors and wiping down surfaces each week will help to reduce the threat of contracting a sickness in the workplace.

 

Slips and Falls

 

Loose area rugs, floorboards, spills, exposed wires and other elements can create an unsafe workspace that promotes slips and falls. Employees who leave filing cabinets open or spill water while refilling at the cooler can create a serious hazard. Securing cords and wires to a wall, securing rugs with backing, and fixing damaged floorboards will help to reduce the risk. On your part, having an awareness of your surroundings is beneficial. Additionally, insufficient office space can create a cluttered environment. Boxes sticking away from corners can extend into pathways and high traffic areas. This can result in a trip, fall or laceration to a leg. To reduce the risk, acquire large office space or at the very least, store older files in a separate location to free up room. 

 

The Workspace

 

Sitting in front of a computer screen for 8 hours each day is not healthy. It wears on the eyes and the body. Make every effort to walk away several times each day for a few minutes to rest your eyes and let blood circulate throughout the body. An insufficient setup can cause strain on your shoulders, back and arms. An ergonomic keyboard and chair can make a huge difference to your overall health and well-being. Sitting tall instead of slouching is also essential. 

 

Your Mental Health

 

A stressful environment can also lead to serious health problems. Work overload day in and day out can take a toll on your mental state. If you have too much on your plate, lighten the load by asking others to pitch in. If this is not possible, you may want to consider finding a new job. Sometimes it’s a boss or an employee that causes stress. Have a heart-to-heart with the manager and express your concerns. 

 

The workplace can contain many real hazards. If you are the employer, make every effort to correct problems before they cause an injury. Keeping our staff safe and comfortable will boost productivity. As an employee, become familiar with the ongoings in the office.
